► Tell us about you and your podcast
I jumped out of a plane at age 18 and realized that PR and entrepreneurship were for me; I raised sponsorship enough to travel from the UK to Australia for 3 months working in the Outback. In 1988-89 I studied at University in Chapel Hill. Fast forward to 1995 I left the UK to setup my EASTWEST Public Relations in Singapore. In 2006 I went to Beijing to open the offices there. In China I set up the import business for several brands including the Morgan Motor Company. I built all these brands using free public relations.
On this podcast I interview other entrepreneurs to learn what works for them to market their business, subject matter experts on trends, and service providers to highlight innovative tools which are available to business owners.
My audience is evenly split N. America, Europe, Asia, with also some in LATAM and Africa. Age demographic - in late 30's to 50's, male and female. Running companies, and NGO's with upto 50 staff.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Let's start with when - I started in earnest in June 2020, with a view to helping fellow entrepreneurs to build their profile during lockdown. With over 25 years of running a PR agency I have experience which big companies can afford but which smaller companies need.
Podcasting enabled me to share in a time efficient way the knowledge that I have, and also to reach out to others for a conversation which offered them value beyond a one2one conversation.
My goals have been to use The UnNoticed Show as a means to share what I know to serve those who need but can't afford a senior consultant, but who could learn quite easily some tools and strategies. It has been an adjunct to my PR agency.
I spent 25 years in Asia, of which 2006-2019 were behind the Gt Firewall of China - the podcast has been an platform to connect with people and information previously out of reach. As I explore these relationships, topics and technologies I share that with my listeners.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I publish shows on Tuesday & Thursday, each episode upto 20 minutes short. The formats are interviews and single host; depending on the nature of the topic. Each show takes some 1.5 hours to post produce. I have found using Descript and the Buzzsprout intro/outro save me significant time. Previously with Garage Band, then Hindenburg, each show would take over 90 minutes, plus transcript editing via Otter.ai
Now the process is streamlined.
I am self employed, and as I run a PR agency I am used to content creation and distribution.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I enjoy giving people the opportunity to share what they do which is of service to others, but which may not be of sufficient scale to warrant mainstream coverage. I learn how those without resources are being innovative when it comes to publicity; and this is much more rewarding than listening to large companies talking about the martech stack they implemented.
I don't have any sponsors in cash, but have sponsors in kind. These are companies which I interviewed and they liked the show, and I liked their product e.g. autosignature, linkedin marketing, AI analysis.
My Linkedin SSI is at 80, fuelled in part by the content I produce on The UnNoticed Show. I create articles from each episode, and by sharing with the network of the guests my own content and network has expanded.
The over riding benefit is that I am learning from many v smart people, people who would otherwise have no reason to share with me their ideas. I make it worthwhile by sharing with my network of over 10k.
