► Tell us about you and your podcast
Our podcast is Film & Whiskey. Co-hosts Bob Book and Brad Gee are best friends. Bob is a movie nerd; Brad is more of an average Joe when it comes to film. Together, we take our love of whiskey with us as Bob cues up classic movies for Brad.
Our listener base is really varied! A lot of people come for the 10-minute whiskey review in the middle of the episode. Others are into classic movies and want to hear whether we're going to take down their favorite film.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Bob listens to a ton of podcasts on his drive to work--mostly movie-related. The more he tried talking movies with Brad, the more they both realized that some of their arguments--and maybe even their analysis--was worth sharing with others.
Initially, we wanted to get to 50 episodes to prove to ourselves we could consistently crank out content. We launched in March 2019, and cleared that hurdle fairly quickly. Now, it's really become a way to interact with both the whiskey and film communities. It's a dialogue between us and them, and it gets more fun by the episode.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release regular episodes weekly on Monday, and bonus Thursday episodes every 2-3 weeks. I'd say we spend about 5 hours of post-production editing the podcast, adding clips and music, etc.
We both work day jobs, but we try to use as many tools as we can to help with scheduling. For example, Buffer has been a godsend for our social media posts.
Currently, we're entirely self-funded, though some of the whiskeys we've reviewed have been donated by our awesome listeners!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We are open to sponsorship opportunities, but haven't partnered up with any brands as of yet.
The benefits we get from podcasting right now are increased conversations with people we never would've met otherwise. We have a series where we interview CEOs of distilleries, movie critics, and other industry figures, and it continually blows our minds that we get to talk to people in those positions.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Brad uses a Samson C01 USB mic, Bob uses a series of XLR mics and a Scarlett 2i2. We record into Audacity remotely (we live about two hours apart) and we talk over Discord while recording our own audio--it's by far the best service we've found that reduces lag.
Our interview subjects have all been brought onto the show simply by reaching out and asking. We try to send a really informative email breaking down what we're asking for--including their time commitment. Especially in the bourbon community, we've found people to be incredibly gracious and willing to devote their time.
► How do you market your show?
We're available on every major platform. Currently, we use Anchor for hosting, and there are links there to submit audio feedback to us, to donate to the show, and to redirect you to our website/blog, where we post text versions of our whiskey reviews.
Most of our marketing is done on social media--Instagram (@filmwhiskey) is by far the best and most interactive follower base we have.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't over-edit your audio. People are willing to put up with a less-than-ideal sounding space (for a while at least) as long as your content is compelling.
Commit to a release schedule. We made it a hard-and fast rule that we would absolutely have something come out every week, and we stuck to it. If listeners don't know when to expect a new episode--whatever your schedule is--they won't follow.
