► Tell us about you and your podcast
Mark Martinez/John Patalano/Chad Parana
We are huge wrestling fans that actually are partnered with a few organizations around the US.
We give our thoughts on the world of wrestling from the indies to the biggest companies.
Wrestling fans around the world have subscribe to our page and listened. We have even interviewed a star from Israel.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We started podcasting because we all have the gift to gab about something we are very passionate about. Most of us are in our 40's and love talking old school wrestling, but we still find time to talk about current stuff. We listened to the big podcasts before like Stone Cold, Jericho, and Cornette, but we have made many friends from other podcasts in the past year.
Our goals when we started were to just bring our opinions to this crazy business and get fans involved with us.
We started planning our podcast in the Spring of 2018 and released our first episode on June 6, 2018.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Can Crushers release two episodes a week. On Sunday we have our weekly recap of what went on during the week. During this episode, we also cover any Live Events we attended during the week. Wednesday's episode we have a guest, as we call it Can Crushers Spotlight, that we interview.
Finding the time to podcast and run our social media accounts can be a bit of a task, but we all have something we bring to the table to make this easier on recording day. Mark is the "tech nerd", John "The English Professor" writes and finds stories of current events, as Chad "The Guru" bring the history spots for us to chat about.
Our podcast is completely self funded by Mark. We won't get into numbers, because if we add up the cost his wife may be a little upset.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We are linked with Collar & Elbow clothing. We get revenue when people use our promo code to purchase from them. It has worked out pretty well and brings in enough for hosting costs plus some marketing for the month. By the way, if you are interested in the Collar & Elbow brand, us promo code "CanCrushers" for 10% off your entire order.
We work with Ohio Valley Wrestling out of Louisville, KY. OVW is owned by former WWE star Al Snow, which also owns Collar & Elbow. Other sponsors can be from an event we are helping promote, a wrestler looking to get more publicity, or friends of the show chipping in.
Per month we average 2,000 listens, but it really is not about numbers with us. We have a great fan base that loves to interact with us at events or via email and social media.
Podcasting is amazing!! We have met so many great people all over the states that just keeps our energy buzzing all the time. Mark has a communications degree, so this helps him stay on his toes with new editing and producing ideas. John graduated with an English degree, again it keeps him fresh writing for the show, and Chad...well lets just say he is a historian!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We are a very simple and fan friendly podcast. We us a Blue Yeti mic in the center of our table with Garage Band and just chat as friend would sitting at the bar. We strive to not be an over-produced show. We bring real thoughts from great friends. Keep it simple!
As we said we go to many events all over, and guess what wrestlers are just like all of us. We all love talking about things we are passionate about. We introduce ourselves and get chatting and just ask, would you like to record with us and let the rest of the wrestling world hear a part of your life them may not know. If we do not record that day with them, we use Skype to call them and record the interview. We do use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to then schedule the times they will be on the show.
With two different style shows each one is prepared differently. Our weekly show on Sunday preparation starts Monday by staying up-to-date with what's happening in the wrestling world. John and Chad take great notes and bring a bunch of topics to the table from throughout the week. Our Spotlight show on Wednesday, can take months of planning with reaching out to wrestlers & promoters to schedule times and intriguing questions for our guest, but we love it.
► How do you market your show?
We do a bunch of marketing on social media; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, personal Snapchats, and our website. cancrushers69.wixsite.com/cancrushers
At one point we knew all the outlets we were on, but now it is tough to keep track of them all. We are not saying that to brag or boast about our show, but it really is hard keeping track when this is not our full-time job. Of course to name some; I Heart Radio, iTunes, BuzzSprout, Stitcher, Spotify and I would be foolish not to mention Listen Notes..LOL. Our website has all our episodes link to it too, in fact that is the first thing you see on our page.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Advice for new podcasters from the Can Crushers, podcast because you love it! Yes you can make money, but we never thought of that. We have a love for pro wrestling and we just want to share it with the masses.
We have learned some cool tricks from other podcasts about wrestling or any sports. Make friends in the genre you are podcasting about, it will only grow your community. Podcasting to us has never been a competition, each podcast is different because of the hosts and guests on the show.
