► Tell us about you and your podcast
Ryan is from Canada and Lotta from Germany. We met years ago by chance on a rural farm in New Zealand and have had our share of ups and downs in life since then, but managed to stay together and find opportunities to bond and grow both individually and as a couple.
We currently live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
We (Ryan and Lotta) are both certified personal trainers, yoga instructors, nutritionists and mindset coaches. Aside from hosting the podcast, we build online courses, and train private clients (in person and remote).
The three main topics we cover are Movement, Mindset and Nutrition. We often also interview fellow coaches from all over the world who practice a variety of disciplines and modalities.
Our listeners are motivated individuals who are ready to take on the challenge, and reap the benefits, of becoming their OWN health and wellness advocate.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We've both listened to podcasts for a very long time. Ryan even still follows Leo Laporte, considered one of the pioneers of podcasts!
Our goal was to share free health and wellness information to not only demistify what we offer as coaches, but also to inspire individuals to make tangible changes in their daily lives.
We started the podcast quite a while ago, but it remained in what we call the "idea space" until only recently. We put it into action, and already have many prerecorded episodes to ensure a steady flow for listeners (at least weekly).
It took a long time to release our first episode for fear that production value wasn't high enough, but we quickly overcame that and learned some editing techniques that have greatly improved the audio quality.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release an episode at least once a week, sometimes twice. Depending on the content, we sometimes spend hours in advance writing down bullet points and gathering important information. Also we often speak with our guests privately to get to know them prior to recording an episode. All in all its time consuming, but fun!
Our day jobs are the same as our podcast - it's all once thing - so we can schedule as much or as little time as we feel the podcast needs that week, without external influence.
We do everything ourselves, and spend very little, thanks to amazing free distribution platforms, editing, tools, and DIY hacks. It's amazing what we can do these days on a budget!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
For now we are not accepting sponsorship (aside from those who would like to promote and resell our online Udemy courses).
We've already made friends with many of our guests, and feel like we are connected to an international tribe of like-minded individuals - it's been amazing!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use Audacity for editing, Anchor for hosting, Headliner for YouTube and social media shorts, Canva for graphics, and Facebook groups to find guests.
We run each episode through a workflow process we created with the software Trello, and assign eachother tasks depending what needs to be done (for example: creating podcast description text, creating interview questions, creating social media images and videos, proofreading, etc).
We interview guests over Zoom and record our own episodes in person, but seated far apart and using pop filters. We once interviewed two guests in the same room, which made the audio editing process very tricky!
► How do you market your show?
We published the show to all major platforms, and share a Headliner video clip of each episode on all our social media platforms. Our listener sources are neck and neck between Spotify and iTunes for now.
We find Instagram stories and LinkedIn groups to be the most useful places to share at the present moment.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't get stuck in your limited beliefs. If you don't think you'd be a good podcaster, then record an episode, listen to it, and delete it. Then do it again. Keep going until you notice an improvement. If you can't even listen to your own episode, it's unlikely someone else will want to. We listen to our own episodes at least twice before we ever release them, and scrap some when necessary. Leo Laporte said a long time ago to allow yourself to be bad at something at first. But remember that he said AT FIRST.
This website is a great resource! Listen notes is authentic and great. Other than that, the tools we mentioned earlier that we use are all very good at what they do, and most are free!
