► Tell us about you and your podcast
I began this podcast in November of 2019 as a way to increase infertility awareness and to create a platform for others to share on. I had no prior broadcasting experience, but desired to create something from scratch. My podcast shares diverse stories of infertility, conditions such as Azoospermia, endometriosis, pcos, and recurrent miscarriage.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I am an infertile woman who never found community during my years of trying to conceive. As a black woman, it was important to create a space that other women of color could feel seen and validated through. The podcast launched November 22, 2019. I planned the launch and built a small community for a month before launching.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
The first year and a half of the show I released episodes every week. I have now started releasing every other week. I am an entrepreneur and small business owner, so my schedule is probably more flexible than others. I record one day out of the week, no more than two interviews that day. Because of the subject matter, it is very draining and heavy so I try to keep my mental health first.
I also limit my time each day, that I work on show. Whether its creating Instagram content, researching ways to market, or seeking new guests. I spend about $30 each month on the podcast, that includes podcast host, and tools such as canva. Everything is self funded unless I am asked to speak on someone else's platform.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
The connections made through podcasting are invaluable and truly a blessing in my niche. I have never monetized the show through sponsorships, I do not have the download reach required per CPM. Most often I am contacted for affiliate marketing, but most times, I decline. I prefer to promote shows that will truly benefit the audience.
Unfortunately, many sponsors do not favor the small listenership of indie podcasters. I find that indie shows receive more opportunities as affiliates. Podcasting have certainly boosted my confidence as an individual and woman.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I find guests through social media connections. I have been using audacity since the beginning for editing audio and for visuals I use another software called moviezilla. I have used zencaster, squadcast, zoom for interviews, each have their own benefits.
► How do you market your show?
Paid marketing I have never used to promote my show. I would like to in the near future to increase exposure. I am on Instagram the most because it helps to create community. I used Facebook in the past but do not find it very valuable for podcasts unless you create a private community, centered around the show. I distribute to pretty much everywhere except, Soundcloud, lol. Its available literally everywhere.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I recommend binging Pat Flynn's YouTube channel. He is a veteran that offers actionable and tangible steps to building community around your show. If your focus in not community centered and your wants second, you will grow frustrated with building your show rather quickly. It's a marathon, not a race. The older your show, the more likely you will be exposed to your ideal listener. Every platform has algorithms that's constantly seeking consistency, engagement, and longevity.
Listen to other podcasts that you aspire to. You can find ways to increase the value and production of your show by doing so.
