► Tell us about you and your podcast
The premise of SuperSerious616 is that Mike and Ed are "in world" within the Silver Age Marvel Universe. We treat the Silver Age Marvel comics (starting with Fantastic Four #1) as if they really happened on the dates they were published. We talk about the implications of all the public events that we would be aware of from the comics, and theorize on what is happening that we do NOT know about.
Within the first year, in addition to the advent of super heroes and villains, there have been three sets of alien invasions, a monster has destroyed lower Manhattan, and real mind control has been demonstrated. Mike and Ed discuss things like, "are we okay with Ant Man using Ants to spy on everyone in the city?" and "Is Ironman a good use of StarkCorp ShareHolder Capital?".
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We have been sitting on this idea for years and thought it was unique and interesting. Eventually we took the leap and started producing it.
We spent a couple of weeks planning, and then we recorded a few episodes as a test. We had friends and family listen to the trial episodes and provide feedback. We incorporated the feedback and re-recorded those early episodes.
A couple of weeks later we launched with seven episodes in the first week. We had a few more weeks ready to go when we launched.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release three episodes per week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
We generally record on Mondays and Wednesdays for about two hours at a stretch. In each session we can record 3-5 episodes, so we are slowly building up a longer and longer queue. We may eventually increase the episode launch frequency.
Once the podcasts are recorded one of us edits the show, collects the images, writes an episode description and pushes the episode into the queue. The other host writes up a description of what happened in the comic itself.
In June 2021 we started spending to promote the podcast. We have advertised on other podcasts and podcast players, and we have hired a publicist to promote the show. We fund it out of our own pocket at this point. The show does not yet monetize.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We have not started monetizing yet. Once we have a large enough audience we may consider running ads. We have also been recording "behind the scenes" where we plan for each episode. We may offer access to those recordings as part of a premium (paid) offering.
The two hosts have been friends for more than 20 years and we enjoy building this project together.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We record over Zoom with BlueYeti mics and AudioHijack.
We edit the podcasts with Audacity.
We host both podcasts and newsletters with Substack.
► How do you market your show?
We have advertised on Overcast. We have started advertising on other podcasts. We have done some partnership with other podcasts (promo-exchange). We have also hired a publicist who has focused on social media so far.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
We are just getting started :)
