► Tell us about you and your podcast
Tyrone Smith from Detroit, Michigan.I've had aspirations of having my own basketball show since my junior year in high school.
The listeners of the show stretches from my home state of Michigan to France and all the areas in between!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast just to give people something to talk about with their friends. Basketball has a lot of moving parts and it garners a lot of discussion positive or negative. I honestly didn't have any goals for the podcast. I just did it to give my perspective on basketball relates stories! Once I grew an audience, the goal was to continue to build the fan base. I started my podcast in March of 2017 and I released the first episode two weeks after starting the show.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release a show bi-weekly in which I record for about 45-55 minutes and edit for about 2-3 hours after recording. Everything is done in house BY ME! On days off I dedicate the night towards working on my craft. sometimes the aspect of doing everything show related will keep me up into the early hours of the morning. Everything about the show is funded by me. All editing and marketing is done by me as well and my hosting is through acast which is $25 per month. Having the show monetized does help a lot!
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I haven't looked into sponsorships. I never thought of making money or working with sponsors until the beginning of this year. I won't be looking into sponsorships until season 4. On average I average about 10-12,000 downloads per month(Average of about 5-6,000 per show). The podcast benefits me by having people seek me out for my opinion on news or just to hear them quote a line from the show or a corny joke. My freestyles have become things of legend lol.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
For equipment I use a yeti mic & record in GarageBand. I use to use audacity but upgrading my computer forced me to use a different recording software. Everything is done by myself which mean I don't have any interviews or any special guest! That's something I want to change going into season 4. To prepare I script out my episode and write down bullet points I want to focus on and go from there.
► How do you market your show?
I market the show on iTunes, Google, iHeartradio, Stitcher, Amazon & will start to market on Pandora. The best marketing channels that work for me is my personal social media and word of mouth! Super old school on how I go about it.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My advice to new podcasters is to do it for the love not the check. Don't worry about what others are doing because their success can deter you from working on your craft and becoming successful.
