► Tell us about you and your podcast
The Twilight Traveler is a podcast dedicated to exploring the world of dark tourism. In each episode, I dive into popular travel destinations and uncover the often overlooked (sometimes haunting) histories that lie beneath the surface. From true crime tales to historical tragedies, the podcast sheds light on the darker side of global landmarks.
What sets The Twilight Traveler apart is its emphasis on ethical travel. I provide thoughtful guidance on how to visit these sites respectfully, ensuring that the stories are told with care and that the memory of victims is honored rather than exploited.
This podcast is perfect for avid travelers, true crime enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone with a fascination for the macabre.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I've always had a deep interest in dark tourism, but I was surprised at how few podcasts focused exclusively on the topic. So, I made my own.
Initially, my goal was pretty simple: I just wanted an outlet to talk about the dark and fascinating locations I had visited. But as I started researching, writing, and sharing these stories, I quickly realized how many people had never heard of the histories behind these sites. That realization shifted my motivation from personal passion to a sense of responsibility. Now, my goal is to educate and to ensure that these tragic moments in history are remembered and approached with the respect they deserve.
I launched the podcast in June 2025, so it’s still quite new. I'd been toying with the idea for a long time, but struggled with imposter syndrome and kept putting it off. It took about a year of self-doubt before I finally committed to the idea, started scripting, and recorded my first episode. And I'm so glad I did.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release new episodes weekly - with short breaks scheduled here and there - and each one takes about a full week to produce, from researching and writing the script to recording and editing. Right now, the podcast is entirely self-funded. All recording, distribution, and marketing expenses come out of my own pocket, though I'm working on launching merchandise soon to help offset some of those costs.
Finding the time to produce the show is definitely my biggest challenge. I also write full-time, and juggling the mental energy it takes to research dark historical events while working on a novel can be draining. That said, I’m fortunate to have a strong support system. My partner handles all the production and creates the original music for the show, which lifts a huge weight off my shoulders.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I would love to find a sponsor in the future, but I try to stay realistic. It takes A LOT of downloads before sponsors typically take interest, and while I do track my streaming numbers, I try not to get too discouraged by them. For me, podcasting isn’t just about reaching a massive audience, it’s about making meaningful connections.
My biggest reward so far came from a listener who told me they planned an entire vacation based on one of my episodes. That kind of feedback truly makes my day. Sharing stories, inspiring curiosity, and encouraging others to explore history through travel is what The Twilight Traveler is really all about.
Of course, monetization would be great down the line, and I’m open to sponsorships that align with the values of the show. But for now, the biggest benefit has been connecting with a passionate, like-minded community and knowing that my work is sparking interest and thought in others. That’s more fulfilling than I ever expected.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Each episode begins with thorough research. I dive into my own travel notes, books, and articles to uncover the history behind each location. From there, I craft a detailed script, and that process usually takes about five days. Once the script is ready, I record the episode, and then my partner takes over the production and audio editing. While I’m not fully familiar with the specific tools he uses, he handles all the technical aspects to ensure high-quality sound.
Currently, The Twilight Traveler does not feature guests, but that’s something we’re excited to introduce soon. I’m planning to invite fellow paranormal and true crime podcasters to join me via Zoom, and hopefully in person for those who are local. So, listeners can definitely expect some new voices on the show in the near future!
► How do you market your show?
Social media has been the biggest driver of discovery for The Twilight Traveler. The show is active on Instagram, where we’re steadily building a dedicated following. Social media has been the most useful and cost-effective marketing tool so far, allowing me to connect directly with listeners and niche communities interested in dark tourism, true crime, and the macabre.
Because the podcast is fully self-funded, I have to be very strategic about how I market it. I’m currently exploring paid ads, but I’m making sure any investment is both effective and budget-friendly.
In addition to online promotion, I’ve started booking in-person events. These require a bit more time and creativity to pull off, but meeting potential listeners face-to-face has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a great way to build genuine connections and expand the audience beyond the digital space.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My biggest piece of advice for new podcasters is to invest in good equipment. No matter how compelling your content is, most people won’t stick around if your podcast sounds poorly produced. The podcasting space is crowded, and listeners have endless options. Give them a reason to choose you by sounding professional from the start.
A quality microphone and a quiet recording environment can go a long way. Also, take the time to learn basic recording techniques and editing - it makes a huge difference in how your show is received. Great storytelling paired with great sound is what keeps people coming back.
