► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Becky Whittaker and I am an experienced Devon (UK) based Counsellor and Supervisor with a passion for working with student counsellors.
I founded the podcast earlier this year, as I am so aware of how difficult it can be to go through the training process and getting qualified. The podcast is an empathetic and supportive resource that focuses on building confidence, getting the most out of training, utilising supervision and much more.
This podcast is aimed at student / trainee counsellors, those looking to train and those already qualified that might be struggling with confidence or feeling not good enough in their work.

► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started my podcast a couple of months ago, at the end of April 2021 and recording my first episode was really scary but so very rewarding. I occasionally listen to podcasts myself and find lots of value in listening to them.
The initial goal of You, Me & The Counselling World was to help bridge the gap and the isolation that student counsellors (and indeed qualified counsellors) can feel. I want to be supportive and show people that being themselves good enough!
When the idea was born, it took me about a month or so to pluck up the courage to actually begin recording, it has been something that has interested me for a number of years previous though.

► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I record an episode once a week, usually on a Tuesday for upload on a Thursday. Each episode takes between 2 - 3 hours to create including editing, but I am getting a bit faster.
I record on a day that I don't see my own counselling clients and supervisee's, so it just about fits into my working week.
The podcast is fully funded by me using a very small home studio that I created for singing and recording songs. Little did I know, when I was buying the equipment what it would allow me to go on to do in the future.

► What do you gain from podcasting?
I don't currently have any sponsorship, as I am working hard on building my audience as the podcast is still very new, I would love to work with a sponsor in the future though!
I am finding the podcast so rewarding, I have received a number of messages from people thanking me and this makes it all worthwhile and very rewarding.

► How does your podcasting process look like?
My show currently features just me, however I do have some really inspiring guests lined up.
I prepare for each episode by writing some bullet points of what I want to cover as I don't script, I like it to be really real and in the moment. I have a good glass of water and settle down in front of my microphone with the curtains closed!
I use a desktop PC, a fabulous Audio Technica Microphone, Focusrite Audio Interface, some AKG headphones and Audacity.

► How do you market your show?
My show is available on all major platforms with most of my downloads coming from Spotify currently.
I enjoy using Facebook and Twitter for connecting with listeners, creating a community and promoting the podcast.

► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I was much more nervous than I thought I would be, but using good headphones whilst recording really helps me to get in the zone. I didn't expect it be so scary as I don't stream live and I am in control of what I put out there.
My advice is to wear over the ear headphone that cancel out other sounds to help you to block out distractions.
I have found podcaster Facebook groups to be a really lovely bunch of people and so helpful.
