► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are a family friendly Dungeons and Dragons actual-play podcast. Which means listeners follow along as we play our our game. We are family friendly because there is NO explicit language or suggestive themes in our podcast. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we believe in media that is uplifting, wholesome, and something that the whole family can listen to.
Our Podcast is Hosted by 2 characters, Saulum the Chaos Bard, and his sidekick, Quill, a sentient phoenix feather. They follow our player characters Henley, Boudreaux, Lyla/Goratha, Roscoe, and Fenrir while recording their adventures through the homebrew world of Kel-eth.
We focus on story telling in our podcast and help people who are not familiar with DND or those who are new to DND, on how it is played by explaining what certain terms mean, like Initiative, skill checks, spells, ect.
Something that is special about us is we have original music and songs Written by D.A. Nichols. She has also written an original RPG campaign called Shields of Power and you can find it at Drivethrurpg.com.
Our Listeners are anyone who loves a good High Fantasy story that are 8 and up, especially those who are TTRPG lovers.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We decided to make a podcast to make because during the pandemic many of our favorite family friendly DND podcasts went away because they couldn't gather together anymore. And with very little family friendly DND podcasts out their we decided to make one ourselves. We believe he have an amazing story to tell and we have a lot fun doing it together. We are all friends and we have been friends for years.
Though it would be nice to make money off this venture, that is not our goal. Our goal is simply giving families something they can listen to together and give them something to talk about around the dinner table.
We started recording in November of 2020 and released our first episode in February of 2021. We started with an introduction of our two hosts Saulum and Quill. Then a sort of a prologue explaining where our story begins. After that Saulum and Quill begin following our adventures as they solve problems and make friends.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release every other Friday. It takes us about a week to 3 weeks to edit and finalize an episode for release. It takes us about that long because we all have full time jobs and do the editing on our free time, as well as some of our episodes we add more produced elements to them.
We record once a month and try to record 2 to 3 episode on those nights.
We fund our podcast ourselves. The initial cost was a lot but we wanted to provide the best audio we could and we believe it has paid off.
We have had many compliments on how well it sounds. It isn't perfect but we hope as we go along we will update our equipment when needed.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
As of right now we do not have any Sponsorships, we are open to them, of course, and we are willing to work with anyone that wants to sponsor our little show. Any one who has a product that is associated with RPGs such as dice, minis, maps, ect, we'd be happy to work out something that will benefit both sides.
Podcasting has helped up learn how to network. We didn't realized how important that is. We also learned how to communicate and create together more effectively. We are always working to improve together.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use PreSonus Studio One 5 for our recording and editing. Our main Editor, Zeb (who plays Fenrir) does an amazing job and is always on time! He does a first edit then sends it to the rest of us. We listen to it to make sure nothing got missed during the long process, then send Zeb our notes. Then he finalizes the edits, sends them to David, the Dungeon Master of the show, to add the music and any notes that were missed during recording such as shout outs or adding a Saulum and Quill scene. It's a group effort to edit and we are also in the process of adding sounds effects.
► How do you market your show?
We use Podbean as our distributer of our episodes. We are on all the top podcast platforms and many littler ones as well. Listeners have found our show through word of mouth, social medias, and social media networking. As mentioned before, we realized how important networking is. Through twitter, Instagram, and Facebook we have been able to keep listeners informed of upcoming episodes and also connecting with other podcasters who help promote us as we promote them as well.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Listen to podcasts that are like yours. Find out what they are doing, then do create with a twist. For example, DND Actual plays are very popular and their are thousands of them out there. So when we started the creative process we wanted to something different to offer. So we came up with Saulum and Quill who guide us through the adventure, and having original music and songs helps us be unique as well.
