► Tell us about you and your podcast
We are Jessie and Travis Wilson, two horror nerds who bonded over their love for spooky movies and married each other back in 2016.
Our show is called What's Your (Least) Favorite Scary Movie?. Each week one person chooses a horror movie they love, but the other hates. As we dive into these films we give our personal ratings and discuss behind the scenes info - all while arguing over who's right and who's wrong. We do this as a celebration of the genre, and to show that horror has a little bit of something for everyone. We also want to encourage others to share their opinions on movies that they feel they may receive backlash for, because we've noticed discussions can get heated over these topics, and we don't want that because on our show we encourage those hot takes!
Our listeners are fans of horror films who come for overall discussion of the films we choose, but also listen to both the good and the bad we see in these films. We want to have something for both the people who love the film, and people who dislike it, because providing both sides tends to bring up points the other may miss, and in the end could maybe change how they feel about the film.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We noticed after we would watch a horror film we both would usually discuss it with each other, going over the things we loved and hated, criticizing and praising, etc. One day we realized we could begin recording these discussions and just release them as a podcast.
However there are so many podcasts out there that discuss horror films, so we decided to fill a hole in the horror movie podcasts niche that we had noticed, and that's people who disagree over horror movies instead of the usual with the hosts discussing films they both enjoyed. We took it and ran with it!
We want to create a community that can openly discuss horror movies without worrying if their opinion is going to get blasted by others. We celebrate all horror, from the best of the best to the bottom of the barrel Tubi films, every single one of them has something good or bad that we want to discuss with everybody. So what started as a fun little way to share our hot takes on horror movies back in January of 2021 hopefully develops into an ongoing dialogue of all things horror with our listeners. That's why we encourage our listeners to provide us with their thoughts on whatever movie we're discussing that month, because we love including listener feedback as well to add onto the discussion and have their feelings and points heard on the show.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We both work full time jobs, Monday - Friday, so we work on this podcast during a lot of our spare time during the weekends and weekdays. Recording begins on the weekend, and editing goes from Monday - Wednesday, with Thursday being the day we release a new episode each week. It can take time, because each week Travis draws a new cover for the episode based on the film that's being discussed that day, but overall it's a fun project to devote time to, and we both really enjoy the product we're putting out.
Everything is self-funded with the podcast. Our host is Anchor, so that much is free, however all the equipment was bought with our own money. We started in a spare bedroom in our apartment, and in April bought a house, where we built our own home studio in one of the spare rooms, now officially called "The Podcast Room".
► What do you gain from podcasting?
No financial gain thus far for the podcast, however we have gained a lot of connections with other likeminded people out there. We've met other podcasters, had conversations with people who follow the show, and even had an opportunity for Jess to fulfill a dream of writing for a horror website. The experience has overall been positive, and we're looking forward to many more friendships and opportunities that are on the horizon.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We begin by watching the movie we plan on discussing and take notes as we watch. After that we do our research for behind the scene info/background info, and watch special features to become as informed as possible. Afterwards we go to "The Podcast Room" where we record on Audacity with our Behringer XM8500 mics and the Behringer UMC202HD interface to give it a nice audio quality. The room all padded up with sound absorbing foam tiles to ensure we get the best sound possible.
When we have guests we simply look for people we think will be fun to chat horror with. We simply reach out to them through email or instant message them through social media. Usually this is other podcasters, but we're open to other people coming on the show to just talk horror with us and give us their opinions as well. . We also have people who work on horror films on the show when we can. Most recently we had director Brandon Christensen on to discuss his latest Shudder Original film SUPERHOST, which led to a lot of insight on the filmmaking process, as well as a good chat on the film in general. For now all this has been done through online resources since these guests have been very far from us (from different states to other countries).
► How do you market your show?
We market our show through our podcast's social media pages for now (twitter, instagram, facebook, etc.) We don't necessarily have a breakdown on conversions from those resources, but we do generate plenty of discussion with other people. Our podcast host does provide info on what platforms are listened to the most though.
So far both twitter and instagram have been fairly successful in allowing us to reach an audience of likeminded people, some listen to the show and others don't. Tiktok has been a great resource for sharing audio clips of our episodes through audiograms. We share these on our other social media as well, and they generally get decent engagement also.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
We've learned to just have fun with the show overall. If you're having fun and enjoying what you do then at the end of the day that's what matters. As a result you'll be putting out content that at least some people enjoy.
Our preferred podcasting resources have been reddit communities dedicated to it. Mostly /r/podcasting. There's a lot of insight from other podcasters, and it's a great way to get the info you need if you want to start your own show.
