I’m Chris and my co-host Yashy and I are the parents of two small children. After becoming parents in 2011, we have focused on exploring the world with the kids and finding family friendly activities in the cities we visit. We have always been avid travellers and when many parents told us that we would be less inclined to travel after having kids, we set out to prove them wrong. Having travelled through 17 countries and more than 75 cities throughout the world, we have made a lot of discoveries and picked up travel tips that we want to share, so we started a podcast as an extension of our blog and YouTube channel, Baby and Life. Our family is based in Toronto, Canada, which is a great place to live with a family. On the side, we run our own digital marketing agency, Y Curation, where we work with brands to help them find new customers and engage with existing ones, especially brands that offer products and services for families.
I have always been an avid podcast listener. As a jogger, I rely on podcasts to keep me both informed and entertained during those long runs through the city. Podcasting is a great way to share expertise and ideas. On our travels, we have learned so much about the cities we have visited and we wanted to share the best places we have found on our travels as well as the lessons we have learned along the way. We started traveling when our first born was just six-weeks old and we haven’t stopped.
To start the podcast, we relied on Yashy’s brother and a friend with a background in sound engineering to provide details on the right equipment to use and the best methods for recording. To this day, Yashy still rolls her eyes every time I unplug our fridge to reduce background noise!
Running our own consulting company has given us the flexibility to record a weekly podcast from our own home. It’s something that we really enjoy doing and it gives us a chance to sit down and relive the memories from the places we have visited. We operate on a schedule, recording on Thursday afternoon, editing on Thursday evening after the kids have gone to bed and posting the show on Friday morning. We are self funded. Some of our equipment was gifted to us. Since all we needed was a small mixing board, two microphones, and my computer, we were able to start the show for less than $500. We are only 12 episodes in, and so we are working hard to expand the reach of the show and are always focused on improving our skills as hosts and storytellers.
I’ve found a lot of benefits. As a Marketer, podcasting is helping me to improve my storytelling abilities. I am not a talkative person by nature and so I often find myself thinking about what I am going to say before I say it. For that reason, I ensure that I am well prepared with a list of topics before each podcast, but when I hit record, podcasting allows my ideas to flow.
Additionally, I have become an avid traveller but that was not always the case. Travelling to countries where I don’t speak the language used to intimidate me. Now that our family has spent months at a time in countries where English is not the primary language, I have gained a great deal of comfort in these settings. Yashy and I use the podcast to help others find the will to travel the world with their family, because we think it's an important part of growing up. It feels good to hear others say that they used the advice and information that we provide on our website and on the podcast.
Every Thursday afternoon, we sit down to discuss the topic of the week, which ranges from destination overviews to family travel tips to topics about raising kids in a city. We ensure to have a set time in our calendars every week in order to keep us on schedule. Once we’ve recorded, I produce the podcast that evening and we launch a new show every Friday morning. To decide on a topic, we usually try to work with a recent family trip or activity and our discussion provides listeners with both the Mom’s and the Dad’s view on that week’s topic.
Over the years, we have built a successful readership on our blog; Baby and Life, and we use that platform to post new episodes of our show. Yashy is very active on social media and has built a substantial follower list that she engages with on a regular basis. We have recently joined the podcast network, Parents on Demand, which is a great source for parenting related podcasts. Right now, we are growing our show organically through blogging and social media. In the future, we plan on doing cross promotions with other podcasts and featuring more guests on the show.
Find a topic that you are knowledgable and passionate about. For us, we have so many travel experiences that we want to relive and relate that it is a joy to sit down and discuss what we liked about each particular adventure. We are also raising our family in a city and are faced with new challenges on a weekly basis with respect to raising kids. Parenting has been the best experience of my life and I love to talk about raising kids and sharing ideas on how to be an active family.
I would also recommend that you learn everything you can about sound before you start the show. We started out doing YouTube videos and learned a lot about sound engineering along the way. If you have someone who can provide advice, such as a musician in the family, that will be a big help.
