My name is Tyson hartnett. This podcast is about athletes and their stories, and their transition to being non-athletes. Our listeners are athletes, former athletes, parents, and all in between.
I started this about 2 years ago (2016). I knew other people had their stories, and podcasts were becoming a way that people consumed info and media.
I release an episode once every two weeks or so. It takes about an hour to do the episode, then an hour to edit and produce it. I fund this podcast myself... It doesn't take too much funding, and I do have a day job. It's just something I do nights and weekends that I enjoy. I find it meditative in a way :)
No money we're getting from it, but typically get around 1,000 downloads per month. How does it benefit me? I don't know, maybe hearing other people's stories, realizing there are athletes who go through the exact same things and struggle with the exact same things like transitioning to being non-athletes.
I used skype and a recording software, but that wouldn't work all the time, so now I just use an iPad and a lavalier that I connect to my phone. The quality is still fine, and nobody complains about the quality. :)
I love the way i find guests... A lot of the time it's just chance. I look at someone's linkedin page and see they were an athlete, or an article I come across, or stuff like that. I am in New York so if they are local I can do it in person, but skype is typically easier. And the prep is just a lot of research into who they are, what they do, so I can have some real detailed questions for them. I start off with them discussing their story, their motivation for their sport, why they decided to take it seriously, their career, then being a non-athlete. I like to just let it flow and not have a set number of questions or anything... I feel it makes it more genuine. But I always try to end with what advice they'd have for younger athletes.

Do it if you care about it. And, don't burn yourself out. I put out 10 episodes in 12 days for the Rio Olympics and I burned myself out, haha. So, balance your time and energy. Also, podcasts you can't replicate. If you don't like to do it, people will know. The voice, excitement, and tone are there for everybody to hear and listen to. If something or somebody doesn't interest you, you can't fake it. You can fake it, but people will know that you are faking. So, just be genuine, and if you need to take a break or want to focus on a specific thing, just do it.
