Hosts: Alexander Nathan, Bernie Uche, Mohaned Kheir, Rishay Rana. An Englishman, Nigerian, Egyptian and Indian united in Toronto: the world's most diverse city.
The Coshcast is UnderTheCoshBlog.com's weekly soccer/football show covering the all the latest news and humour across Europe's major leagues, our local Toronto FC, and international competitions. Expect warmth, analysis, and plenty of laughs!
The podcast started in August 2013 as an outlet for our frequent footballing discussions, debates and jokes. The goal at the start was just to have some fun and hope that others would enjoy or connect with the conversations we were having.
Some of us were podcast listeners already while others were very new to the medium, but somewhat ridiculously, we kicked off our first episode as if we'd been around for years. No introductions, no explanation, just straight into chatting about whether Marouane Fellaini was a good signing for Manchester United (he wasn't)!
We all work full time so this is something we do every Monday evening, and the recording / publication process takes us about 2.5 - 3 hours.
We currently pay for Soundcloud Premium, our website and some online marketing such as boosted posts. We currently fund this by producing and hosting soccer trivia nights in downtown Toronto. They're a ton of fun for us and the participants, and it's really cool to be able to meet and interact with some of our listeners too.
We don't gain financially, but we've certainly gained socially. Podcasting every week has brought the four of us closer together as friends, but also allowed us to meet and connect with a whole community of soccer fans in Toronto and across the world online.
We've also had the privilege of having some wonderful guests on the show, from journalists at the Toronto Star and CBC and television pundits at TSN to the president of the Canadian Premier League, former international footballers and more. We wouldn't have met these people otherwise and it's wonderful to have the opportunity to do so.
We use Garageband to record and a Blue Yeti USB microphone. We're also powered by a good deal of black tea with varying degrees of milk and sugar.
We prepare for each episode by putting together an agenda that covers all of the previous weekend's most important news. We also all individually dig for particularly funny stories for a segment called Mumu of the Week. "Mumu" is Nigerian pigeon-English slang for "fool", or "idiot", and it's a segment in which we highlight some of the more ridiculous and amusing things from the world of football that go on OFF the pitch.
In terms of guests, we find most through our interactions on Twitter, although some require more digging. A few years ago we found out that former Liverpool goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar was living in Canada, so we did some research and found out that he was coaching at a club in Ottawa at the time. We contacted the media person at the club to request an interview and then picked a weekend to go out there. We made a road trip out of it, had a great time and it was a really fun interview.
For the sake of sound quality, we try to do most interviews, or have guests on, in person... though we've used Skype once or twice.
The usual spots. Twitter, Facebook, email, sometimes Reddit. We also market the podcast when we host our soccer trivia nights and ultimately, word of mouth is the best marketing you can get. Our breakdown is probably 3/4 iTunes, and the rest divided between Soundcloud & Audioboom.
Work on your sound quality! Test the quality, levels and volume and do whatever you can (and can afford) to improve it. If it isn't as comfortable to listen to your pod as it is to listen to ones you enjoy, how can you get it there?
