Hannah works at a non-profit in Southern New Hampshire, and is the loving mother to several fur-babies, and an immortal fish named Blu. She lives in a house respectfully dubbed the “dude ranch” with her boyfriend Evan and his two brothers Eric and Brendan. Courtney (aka Chort) is an aspiring nurse and works several jobs as she makes her way through nursing school. Thanks to mutual friends, Courtney and Hannah met at the ranch nearly five years ago and have been the best of friends ever since.
One dark and frigid night in Mid-December Hannah and Chort decided on a drunken whim that it would be fun to start a podcast. At that time, we had listened to probably six professional podcasts, and we naively convinced ourselves that “if they can do it…we can do it.” With that mindset and no knowledge of audio or editing…we dove head first into the podcasting world, and that is how DAMN YOU DIARY was born.
However we wanted to be more than a couple of drunk girls who talked about life (we do that all the time!), we wanted to have a “bigger” purpose, a meaningful purpose. Our thought was: if we could start a podcast, and get listeners to get involved, we could essentially organize and start a “good-deed” revolution. We could try to unify all those people like us, who want to do good things, who are good people at heart, but just cannot get over their own anxiety or straight up laziness to do anything about it. I mean let’s be honest…it’s hard to be good all the time, so we are attempting to put in the effort. We hope that one day we will have enough listener support to fund lots of good deeds and donations to worthy causes. However until then, we are just a couple of girls in the basement just trying to be good people and have some fun.
Before podcasting, Hannah and Chort would meet every Friday at the dude ranch to hang out. We would make dinner, have wine, and watch Netflix... Now we do all those things AND make a podcast. The goal is to record an episode every week and release it by Monday morning.
We have inherited most of our equipment and general knowledge from our musician friends, and have been lucky enough to cash in on a few Christmas and birthday presents to fund our initial startup. However, all the good deeds and donations that we’ve done so far have been funded by our own full time jobs and generosity. While the thought of “sponsors” sounds exciting, we are more interested in audience involvement and are currently brainstorming “fundraising events” that will hopefully result in a perpetual cash flow that we can then put into more elaborate good deeds.
I think the best part about being naïve and blindly jumping into podcasting is the fact that our Podcast is growing WITH us. While our early episodes maybe riddled with poor audio and random tangents, DAMN YOU DIARY has truly chronicled our adventures as friends, and as a podcast. Each episode we get a little more comfortable, we improve the audio, and if you look back, it’s really amazing how far we’ve already come in the few months we’ve been doing podcasting.
For us, DAMN YOU DIARY is in many ways our personal diary. We drink, research stories that interest us, and pretty much just try to live our lives with the goal to be better people. While we don’t have many followers at this point, we do have many supportive friends and fellow podcasters who have been awesome at helping us find our audience.
We are amateurs…at best and to be blunt, we pre-maturely jumped into podcasting, before we really knew what podcasting even was. Thankfully, we have come across nothing but amazing and supporting people. Our friends have stepped up and taught us audio tricks, created music for us, co-hosted, guest stared, and have provided an unbelievable amount of enthusiastic support. We’ve met great hosts of other podcasts who have been more than willing to review or collaborate on our podcast, and when all else fails, there are thousands of helpful websites if you just Google it.
We are growing! Slowly…but GROWING! At this point, we’ve set up social media accounts on Twitter (#damnyoudiary), Instagram, Facebook and have even set up our own website damnyoudiary.com. We have managed to get ourselves on Stitcher, Google Play, iTunes, Blubrry, Soundcloud, Podcast Addict, and are waiting to be approved by Spotify….one day. If all else fails, googling “damn you dairy” will also bring you to us. We really tried to make it as easy as humanly possible.
FIGURE OUT YOUR ARTWORK! From what I have learned, iTunes should be your first priority, and if your artwork is hard to read or comes out fuzzy, it takes these guys FOREVER to update the art. Episodes update frequently, but artwork…NOPE, most places update that on a much less frequent basis, so if you upload crappy art, it can really put a damper on your “search appeal”
