I'm DeHart, an independent musician currently in Vancouver Canada and I run a project called Thing A Week. Every week for all of 2018, I try to branch into a wildly new and different genre of music, and my podcast is just one of the ways I distribute my work.
I am a physicist, but I've also been a life long musician. It didn't take me long to figure out that it doesn't matter how good of a performer I am if I can't mix and produce my work all on my own. So, with some inspiration from Jonathan Coulton, I took it upon myself to compose and produce a song a week to help push my skills and creativity with a concise goal in mind.
I've been composing and producing my own music for about three years now and I get better with every track. I hit the ground running as 2018 came in, and it was a bit of a rocky start, but now I have a backlog of songs/episodes to release a few weeks in advance so I can keep my cool.
I'm very committed to my craft. If I'm awake, I'm either in my lab playing with lasers or I'm at home mixing tracks. I'm extremely grateful my girlfriend is so supportive of me pursuing my passion because this hobby has very much consumed me. I'm thankful that time is the only thing this podcasts costs me to produce. In a week, I defend my Master's thesis. I'll start worrying about marketing more after that is all said and done.
New episodes are usually featured on several podcast hosting sites. With this policy in place, I can get my music exposed to more people who would otherwise never stumble upon my work. There is currently no financial sponsorship of my podcast nor my musical work.
My mind latches onto different music every week or so. With some new favourite artist in mind, I usually come up with a little melody and end up beat boxing it into my DAW, REAPER. Then comes a series of acoustic scratch tracks, drums, bass, proper guitar tracks and me listening to drafts on my way to and from work every day to iron out all of the rough edges. Sometimes I want to apply some really complex processing, so I will have some tracks already setup with the plugins I expect to use. If I'm mixing someone else's podcast or album, this really comes in handy.
I always feel cheep and dirty when I have to market my music. As of late, I simply try to have three genuine conversations with new people a day. This establishes real relationships and is more effective than me mass spamming or advertising my work to people. I will work on developing my marketing skills more after my thesis is finished.
Get an audio engineer (message me!). Unless you've experienced the grand failure of trying to publish music or audio for the first time before, you have no idea how bad the audio quality of your podcast really sounds. You need EQ subtraction, probably a noise gate, compression, a limiter, and intro/outro music if you don't already have some. I am actively looking for proper podcasts to mix and produce for, so please reach out to me.
