Three Co-Hosts Tay (me), Raw Dog Ryan and Amber (producer). Amber tends (or at least tries) to give some balance to the wacky guys' points of views and outlandish sense of humor.
Our show revolves around wacky observational comedy. As our iTunes description reads "If you listen, you will laugh… and probably cringe. Sensible People brings you your bi-weekly dose of outrageous observational comedy and life advice from the minds of three unfiltered Chicagoans. Each episode they share stories, discuss taboo topics, play amusing games, interview guests from all walks of life and perform entertaining comedy skits. New episodes every other Monday."
Our listeners are those that like to laugh and are not easily offended!
We began throwing ideas together in early 2017 and launched with three episodes in October of that same year. We first met in person in February of 2017 and our first release was October of 2017, so 7 months or so before going live.
Ryan and I wanted a to create something that we could use as a canvas for our wild sense of humor. Amber had a passion for podcasts and helped drive us to using a podcast as our platform.
Time is hard, you have to dedicate yourself to this being a part time job. Working weekends, nights, lunch hours. Thinking about it all the time is key. Funding is small for now and having three of us to split the costs helps with that burden.
We release episodes bi-weekly, every other Monday. We usually work on content the week leading up to a recording and spend about 4-5 hours on recording day.
We're relatively new still and eventually want to generate revenue. Right now we take sponsors that are willing to host giveaways, etc. We also just began selling merchandise which we hope will become an additional stream of revenue.
Podcasting has opened the door to many networking opportunities and the industry seems to be a super collaborative bunch. Lots of friendly folks that we look forward to sharing some laughs with down the road.
We use a Behringer soundboard, three mics/headphones and hook up to a Macbook that has Audition installed.
To find guests to interview, We simply reach out via email or social media. We've been successful so far at making connections.
We use Skype to do interviews.
We are on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play Music, TuneIn, Podknife and more. We have found good success in marketing ourselves on Instagram and Twitter. We have a Facebook but it tends to work a little less than the other mediums. I would say that Instagram generates by far the most fan based engagement, whereas Twitter is the best place to interact with potential guests, other pods, and network.
Get off the pot and go for it. But if you do, put your heart into it, don't half ass it.
Subreddits and Facebook private groups are super helpful to gain tips and network with other podcasters.
