Our show is called 'We Watched A Thing'. I am a professional visual effects artist, animator, and editor, and my co-host is a professional cameraman and editor. Each week we discuss one film, whether it be a brand new release, or a classic that one of us recommends to the other.
We keep it short, and we keep it light and humorous , but we try use our backgrounds as video professionals to give a different point of view than other film shows might have.
We started podcasting in November of 2017. It was almost by happy accident. We both work in the television and film industry, and my co-host had the idea to start an animated film review show for YouTube, as I am by trade an animator.
We knew that we wanted to do new releases though, and in order to keep them relevant, turn around would be tight, so we wanted to keep it short. But once we stepped into the studio to discuss ‘Justice League’, we realized we had so much more to say. I've long been a listener of podcasts and audiobooks, and am a huge fan of the medium.
When we started recording and realized what we were going to end up with was closer to half an hour, we had the idea to start it as a podcast instead. We couldn’t be happier with the decision.
We release an episode at least once per week, and on occasion twice per week if there are multiple things to discuss. In total it takes about 4 hours to produce a half hour episode. Anywhere between 30 minutes and 45 minutes to record, and then editing takes the longest chunk of time. We edit the podcast ourselves. Finding the time to do this can be tricky, and we will often record over our lunch break at work, or early in the morning on weekends.
In total we spend about $45 a month. $15 for hosting, $15 for our website, and $15 for marketing.
We have no sponsors yet, but we have gained loyal listeners to contact us, share our show, and support what we do. We've also gained many friends in the podcasting community. Podcasting gives us a creative outlet, and is just fun to do. Even if our listeners all drop off, we'll probably do it forever now, and are already working on a second show!
In preparation for each episode we watch a film and then write a page of detailed notes. Coming from film and television we were lucky to already have access to some great equipment.
Our general set up is a sony field mixer, with two shure shotgun microphones, and Zoom H2 recorder. The entire setup is portable and battery operated, which is fantastic.
The mixer has 4 channels, which means if we ever have a guest we can just plug in a third mic. We record onto SD card with the Zoom H2, and then edit the show using adobe premier and adobe audition.
Editing is the longest part, usually cutting a 45 or so minute record down to a tight, concise, and funny 20–30 minute show.
Social media has proved effective for marketing. Our main channels are twitter, instagram, and Facebook. On Twitter we are part of an active podcasting community who help each other by retweeting each others episodes. On Facebook we have used targeted paid advertising that has proved effective.
One of the best ways to promote is through other shows, either through shout outs or promos. Our listeners are mainly from iTunes / apple podcasts, and are mainly in the US.
I know now how hard it is to attract listeners to a new podcast with no name behind it. Maintaining listeners isn’t a problem if the quality and content is good, but getting the name out there to begin with can be a real challenge.
Definitely start communicating with other hosts. Swap promos and shout outs, and become a part of the community.
