Justin “Juice” Kelly and Shane Jones are two guys from the Midwest trying to build a community and a podcast so one day we can do it for a living. We interview guests and talk about life and current events. We estimate our demographic to be between the 18-35 age range but are really unsure.
Shane and I are both avid listeners of podcasts. We have different tastes which makes it good discussing other shows sometimes. Justin “Juice” Kelly started the show over 3 years ago but didn’t start taking it seriously until about 1 and a half years ago. The initial goal was for a hobby I could be proud of. Motivation was due to all the other shows I listened to and I thought I could do that. I got the equipment December of 2015 and posted my first episode in February of 2015 I believe.
Time is easy. I work around my work schedule, we usually record 1pm EST on Sundays. Funding has been completely supplied by my regular full time job. We release on a weekly schedule, episodes are live 12:00AM Monday. When it comes to finding time, I just make the time. I couldn’t tell you how much money has gone into it but it better start making money some day.
I would definitely share revenue if we were making it with my co-host but alas not yet. I did have a sponsorship but it was really one sided, it was for "never too hungover" a hangover prevention drink. We do roughly 2-3k a month but it is growing exponentially since Shane jumped on board in the past year.
We use as much free stuff as possible; software is Audacity, equipment I was lucky enough to have a fantastic listener actually purchase the board, 2 mics, and two headphones. Other than that the rest of the equipment has been bought by yours truly. I also use a Mevo camera to stream the podcast live to Facebook.
For interviews I reach out to people from all walks of life whether it be twitter, facebook, Instagram. Social media really helps. To prepare I take notes and plan the outline and then we go from there. I have used Skype, the telephone, and zoom with varying degrees of success.
SOCIAL MEDIA, once I start receiving some income I may try to sponsor or boost posts but not until I do. We’ve also done some live shows to try to grow the audience.
Anywhere you get podcasts you can probably find our show. It goes on all social media, live stream on facebook, post on Instagram, and google is the easiest way to find us just type in Juice in the Morning and we will come right up.
Just go out and do it. Get out of your head about how good it’s going to be. Also focus on sound quality and content. I’ve shut new podcasts off because I couldn’t stand to listen to them. Content is important, do something creative and fresh. Theres a billion movie review podcasts, doesn’t mean you can’t do a movie review podcast, just think of ways to separate yourself from the crowd.
It wasn't obvious beforehand but its not easy to talk on a mic, especially when I started out and was by myself. Also, I didn’t think the community would be so welcoming on one hand but on the other hand big shows do not want to help you most of the time.
