33% Pulp hosts Linzi, Daniel, and Sarah are very educated in things that AREN'T pulp fiction, but we've always enjoyed the vintage book covers and titles. We each read a different third of a pulp novel, then we recap the whole book together. We hope to provide some easy entertainment to people who enjoy stories with unique commentary, historical facts, and lots of profanity.
I (Linzi) listen to A LOT of podcasts. I listen to about 5-6 podcast episodes a day on average. I have always thought it would be fun to podcast about something, but couldn't think of a topic. One of our original hosts, Amber, came up with the idea to recap books with funny covers that end up in bargain bins. Our number one goal is to "have a decent time". Next is to produce a show we actually like, in terms of sound quality, transitions, and commentary. We began recording in October, but launched in mid-November of 2017 after a faulty start (we hated our first book and there were recording errors). I would say it took about six weeks to get our first episode released.
We release an episode every week. It usually takes a week to record, edit, and release. In terms of work distribution, one of our original hosts edited the episode, while I took on internal admin (scheduling stuff), the website, and social media. I honestly don't know how we find the time to do what we do! We currently fully fund the pod, which costs about $50 a month (outsourced editing and hosting).
We currently have an audibletrial.com link. We make no revenue, but hope to in the future. That said, through my social media work I have learned many transferable skills and have met some very interesting and supportive fellow podcasters!
I use a Yeti microphone (not sure what the others use). We use Audacity to record and edit, Auphonic (sometimes) for blanket sound engineering, and Libsyn as a pod host. We also pay for blubrry stats for cross-referencing.
We are in the process of interviewing our first round of guests! We held a 99-word flash fiction contest. We had many more submissions than we thought we would receive, but are happy with the finalists we chose. We will be interviewing them via Google Hangouts and will ask them to record their own audio on their end, then upload to a shared Google Drive.
We prepare for our episodes by reading our third of the book and preparing a script/notes. I create visual material to promote the show via social media.
I have found Twitter to be useful in terms of learning about new podcasts. The #podernfamily has been excellent at helping us grow our audience.
Podcasting is MUCH more time consuming than one might think. It is definitely a side job that you pay to have...at least in the beginning. But other podcasters tend to be very helpful and supportive. Don't feel weird or ashamed to ask a pod host you admire about their process! I've personally asked a few and was so impressed and grateful for their detailed responses and advice.
