I am Johnna French, creator and host of Champagne & Lobster. The podcast is an offspring of the website, Johnna Knows Good Food, which explores the massive world of food via recipes, restaurant reviews, drink mixes and food news. Champagne & Lobster takes a look into the person behind the movement with the movement having many different faces and industries. We interview individuals from all different industries to find out the stories behind them and their success.
I started this podcast as a way to share the inspiring stories and conversations that I pick up along the way on my food journey. They have helped me to build my own brand and gain success in an industry that I entered only 10 years ago. I want people to hear the good, the bad and the ugly of what it takes to get where you want to go. I also want people to get to know the person behind the food, the business idea, etc. This gives humanity to any product that is out there.
I started the podcast in August 2016 with recording and initial publishing happening within two weeks. I wanted it to be timely so I went in full speed ahead with production, editing and publication.
I release an episode a month because it takes about two hours to collect the material and another hour or two to edit. If I tried to overreach, my content will suffer and it will not be consistent. One of the best pieces of advice that I got when starting this podcast was to be consistent. Listeners will tune in when they can rely on you to have consistent content. I do the podcast interviews after work and it is mobile. I carry a compact mic with me and record the podcast on my phone in a quiet location. This makes it easy and convenient for my guests. Additionally, I have little to no costs for production and editing.
We accept sponsorships and are seeing more revenue for the website as a result of the podcast. Podcasting is really a lot of fun for me so I try to focus less on revenue than on putting out good, quality content. I do know that once you reach about 10K listens per episode, however, you can easily seek out sponsors via your specific industry.
I use a small mic that my husband brought me on Amazon to get started. It worked, so I stuck with it. I find guests wherever I go! I am always intrigued by people's lives and stories. It is heartwarming to hear how they got where they are, who inspired them, their random quirks, etc. I try to do most interviews in person, but I have definitely done some via phone. I prepare by reading up on their bio, jotting down basic questions I want to know about them (as if I were going on a first date with them) and keeping the number of questions to a reasonable amount not to overload the podcast.
Social media! I promote via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I wish I could get my numbers from iTunes but Soundcloud has been the best way to get stats on my listeners. Honestly, Soundcloud has been the best outlet for me because there are times when I do not get to promote my podcast but I will already have listens because of subscribers on Soundcloud.
Choose to talk about a topic that you LOVE for your podcast. Podcasting is just like any other passion: if you do not love it, there will be plenty of days where it will be a challenge to do it. If you love it, that challenge will be overcome with that passion. Also, be consistent. Consistency is like with anything else, no one wants a flake. Show people they can rely on you for good, constant content.
