► Tell us about you and your podcast
The Relatable Rhetoric Podcast has one main goal: to help women avoid burnout. Nearly two-thirds of my listeners are women between the ages of 28 and 44, and I am honored to be a safe space for them.
I know what it's like to say yes too often, and hate myself later for it. By holding a mirror up to everyday life, this podcast sheds light on ways women can stop doing that. And while that seems like an easy thing to do, it can be hard. It's not just action-based, it's mental. By tackling how we think, we can tackle our actions more effectively and ultimately create the lives we want.
In a nutshell, Relatable Rhetoric is a mix of casual conversations, occasional sarcasm, unending topics we can all relate to, and reassuring reminders that women can find their stride!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast in April 2021, but I knew wanted to start a podcast almost 3 years prior to that. I would practice on the voice memo on my phone, or driving in my car, and I'd discuss random topics that came to mind. It was a judgement free zone. That's when I realized how much I would enjoy having a podcast.
I'd had a blog for some time and enjoyed storytelling through writing, but there was something about speaking that continued to draw me in. After practicing on my phone for awhile, I decided on a whim to release my first episode. My initial motivation was to focus more on inspirational speaking, but more and more I found myself wanting to share practical advice as well. Today, that's what my podcast is: half inspirational, half practical. I believe we need both on a daily basis.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I have a full-time job, so finding time to record has to be intentional. I release episodes weekly and it takes me roughly three to four days to prepare an episode from start to finish. I start with a topic, prepare my notes, record the episode (which I now film), and then edit. I try to tackle one part of this process each day, but when I'm flowing creatively, I can sometimes go from start to finish in 1-2 days. Any free time I get is fair game for content creation, but I prioritize at least 2-4 hours weekly to produce and promote episodes. I currently fund this podcast on my own, which isn't much considering I do all of the editing and marketing myself. I bought a mic, have an online studio subscription that costs $20 a month and I pay for wifi in my home... everything else that I use is free.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Podcasting is a beautiful opportunity for me to uplift others. I thoroughly enjoy encouraging women and helping them add fulfillment and balance to their lives. It's also an opportunity to share God with others while sharing personal stories (of triumph and defeat). I haven't started accepting any sponsorships yet, but look forward to soon!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I currently use Anchor to host and edit my podcast, Riverside to film my episodes, a Blue Yeti microphone for audio, and Canva to create marketing assets. My process is simple, especially since I don't have guests on my show yet.
I brainstorm and select a topic, jot down notes and talking points, film my episode, and then edit the separate audio and video files. Once those are complete, I upload the audio to Anchor and the video to YouTube. From there, I use the Canva assets (images primarily) to promote the episode on my social platforms. I believe with a little effort, anyone can create and run a podcast.
► How do you market your show?
My listeners are all over the globe! They are in more than 20 states in the U.S. and over 10 countries worldwide. While many listen primarily on Apple Podcasts (60%), there are also listeners who visit from web browsers (18%), Anchor (7%), and several other platforms. I'm thrilled to know my podcast is streaming on several major platforms, including Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and iHeartRadio.
As for marketing, I share the podcast regularly on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and now Tiktok. Most of my traffic comes from Instagram.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My advice for new or aspiring podcasters would be: Don't overthink it! We are our worst critics sometimes. Don't obsess over perfection, just do your best. I agree that preparation can make your podcast launch better, but after you've done your research and have everything you need to get started, do just that -- get started! Don't be afraid to learn as you go. If you wait to feel 100% ready, you may be waiting forever. If you're looking for resources on how to get started, I recommend searching Pat Flynn or Blessed and Bossed Up (Tatum Temia) on YouTube.
