► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Daniel, I founded this podcast a few years ago because I truly loved talking magic. We are all very deeply ingrained into the game and community and love all aspects of magic. Being able to talk about commander and it's never Infinite combinations of cards and deck types is a blast. It has been a lot of fun seeing our playstyles change and grow over the years. The listeners of this show are hard to summarize but a good start would be that they are incredibly supportive people from all backgrounds and walks of life. They love commander, building decks and getting together with their friends for this game we like. They are great members in their communities, love to learn and have a great sense of humor. I couldn't ask for a better group to make content for! It's always nice when they reach out about deck techs or even just to check in. If you love commander or love talking magic then this show truly is for you.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this show with one of my friends from the magic community right before the pandemic. It was actually really nice to have something to put so much time into when the world was going crazy. I *Daniel " spend a ton of time working and podcasting was always such a great way to pass the time while I worked and learn about new subjects. I love to talk as well and decided it was a good idea to jump into it. We launched the first episode about 5 days after the initial concept and the Audio quality definitely shows that haha. It was really fun growing our skills and making it sound better and better as time went. The cast changed through the episodes but the core of the show remained the same. That we just wanted to talk magic as much as we could.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I funded the show basically with just extra fun money I had kicking around and upgraded my set up more and more as time went on. As for the time, we all have the same amount. Doing a show is a commitment and you have to show up to do it, even when you're tired or even when things are rough. Just set aside that block and put out content is the only way to do it. We record generally once a week and it takes a bit more than an hour to do. We don't go in with any script so it takes a bit less prep. Sometimes it's going over a deck or a concept in the game but we generally have a pretty loose way of approaching the show that I feel comes off as more genuine. Between the group we spend a few hours a week for sure. Editing takes time but goes faster when you improve your work flow. Posting on social media takes time to make posts and we do YouTube games as well. A few hours a week for replying to messages and marketing.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
This one is easy, we gain an outlet to talk about the game we love and interact with people who love it just as much as us. Small sponsorships have come our way which has been nice and honestly the more aggressive you are in searching for them the more product you get. We make a few hundred a month doing it which DEFINITELY offsets hosting costs. Mostly it's been a great way to increase our public speaking, our speech patterns in general and it's been a fun and creative outlet that has kept us sane through these last few wild years.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Oh equipment would be a lot to mention but most importantly we use a rodecaster. It is an invaluable piece of equipment for producing a show if you have the money for one it really helps. Often we don't really have guests but if we do we give them a run down of the topic give them a space to plug their show and content and go from there. The episodes are very casual sonirs fairly easy for guests to be a part of it. As far as preparation goes not too much to it we run our sound checks, get equipment set up fairly standard stuff. We get the link for the list we are looking at set up and get the show on the road. Sometimes we have in person guests but mostly over discord. Most guests are already known communities members.
► How do you market your show?
Discord has been a really big help as it lets us interact more and more with community members. We also use instagram that is the one we are the most active on by a lot. Generaly we market through those and through websites that post is in community content where lots of players already reside. As far as the advertisement of the show goes it's talking about the episode posting clips posting links. Very standard stuff for it.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Start. Nothing else matters but starting, your show can't be good or bad if it doesn't exist and doesn't post. You will improve along the way but don't get caught in trying to make it perfect. Just hit record, start your Episode and have fun. The subject you care about enough to dedicate time talking to is good to be interesting to someone so just work on having fun and improving every time. Starting is the most important part. Listen to your own show. It sounds silly but if you can't listen to your own show and see it's quality how can you expect others to ? Learning from your own content and reviewing it is extremely important. Don't be afraid to ask for feedback on it and don't be insulted if people give suggestions on how to improve. They are telling you what would make them listen, compile that list and learn from it.
