ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Axel REE Ltd managing director Patience Mpofu talked with Proactive about the company’s rare earths and gallium portfolio in Brazil, including progress at the flagship Caladão Project and plans to accelerate work at the Caldas Project.
Mpofu said Caladão remains the company’s main priority, with Woolrich now moving into a new phase following a significant resource upgrade. She explained that the resource has “literally doubled” and highlighted the inclusion of an indicated resource as an important step in increasing confidence in the project.
The next stage of work at Woolrich will include hydrogeological studies, environmental baseline work and field trials designed to assess how rare earths could potentially be recovered in the ground. Axel REE also plans to progress work that will help establish design criteria and support future scoping studies.
Mpofu also discussed the opportunity presented by gallium, describing its strategic importance given the concentration of global supply in China. The company is assessing whether gallium can be recovered economically from its mineralisation while keeping reagent consumption, capital requirements, operating costs and impurities under control.
At Caldas, the company is also looking to undertake further drilling following renewed industry interest in the region. Mpofu said previous work had demonstrated strong mineralisation and that the next objective is to determine whether additional drilling can support the definition of a resource.
Mpofu also discussed Axel REE’s upcoming presence at the IMARC conference in Sydney, where the company plans to present its development pathway and approach to potential low-cost, low-capital in-situ recovery.
