Supporting LGBTQ+ Students In Schools & Why You Should Care About It w/ Amy Cannava!

We've all been a part of a school community at some point, and it's undeniable that our school experiences shape a lot of who we become as adults. It shapes how we show up in our work, our confidence level, how we relate to others, what we believe to be true about our abilities and our potential, and so much more. This is especially true for LGBTQ+ students who have the additional challenge of navigating the school waters that aren't always safe, welcoming spaces. This is also true for LGBTQ+ educators who are working in staff/school climates that may not always present the opportunity to be fully authentic.

Megs, who, by the way, is also a school psychologist by professional training & practice, sits down with fellow school psychologist Amy Cannava to chat about what schools look like today for LGBTQ+ students, LGBTQ+ educators, full school teams, and the work she does to continually move this work forward. 

Amy specializes in working with queers & trans youth, and is the chair of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) LGBTQI2-S committee that works to increase school psychologists' cultural competence, knowledge of best practices, and direct service provision (including mental health) for students in the community. 

Amy bring 18 years of experience as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist...in addition to being a "cool" psychologist...and shares a number of her experiences working with students, families, colleagues, and school teams how she helps them grow in their confidence, gain skills to identify and create safe, inclusive spaces, and how to be the best versions of themselves in each of their roles.
