ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Saturn has no ground for twenty thousand miles. So when a helium skimmer pilot's altimeter dies mid-storm and his ship settles onto something the wind can't move, he doesn't call dispatch. Pilots who report things under the clouds get papered for pressure psychosis and never fly again.
He calls the barge's old winch operator instead, a nearly deaf man who hears the storm through a copper rod in his teeth and swears a mean old cow lies under the weather, eating a pilot now and then. Don't light her, the old man warns. The pilot fires his thrusters anyway, and the horizon stands up and closes over him.
Now he is inside something alive: a vast amber chamber lit through living hide, where metal-eating scrapers grind at his hull and every radio call comes back slowed and smeared. He has fuel for one climb and no way to make more. Each dusk, a pilot lost fifty-five years ago is still broadcasting his log, every entry a little more content to stay.
Day by day, the chamber shrinks. The hickory cage around his cockpit splits slat by slat, and the walls begin handing his own voice back to him, rearranged into a promise he never made. Down here, she keeps everything that falls in.
