00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:08.240
Good afternoon, Sunshine, and welcome back to the Eminate Love podcast, where we become the difference from the inside out.
00:00:08.400 --> 00:00:16.640
It's not about being perfect, it's not about having all the perfect answers, it's about becoming the difference from the inside out.
00:00:17.199 --> 00:00:20.879
And today we're talking about missing someone.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:34.399
And sometimes when we miss people, it's because we loved really big and we had a lot of love in our heart for somebody, and they're no longer with us.
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:55.520
And I know that when um we're gonna we're gonna get to that topic, which is really important to me, but before we do, I wanna say that the tip of this week is to notice what's happening inside of ourselves.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:04.640
Okay, because love is noticing and paying attention to what's happening inside of ourselves, right?
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:16.799
And it starts with noticing that we're having a feeling, or we're having an urge, or we're having a a thought about something.
00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:33.040
It starts in here, and it's something that comes to our attention sometimes glaringly in the in a moment of intense emotion, and sometimes it's a little more subtle.
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:38.640
And either way, it can still come, it can come to our attention, right?
00:01:39.120 --> 00:02:11.199
And so today we're gonna talk about a few of the things that I've noticed uh since I started missing someone almost 15 years ago, and it's been quite some time, and what I did when I first was experiencing loss is that I went to Google and I Googled it to try to figure out what the map for this would or could be.
00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:23.199
And Google told me that there were like five steps, and as soon as I went through those five steps, that I would feel healed or be healed from this experience, and it couldn't have been further from the truth.
00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:25.439
In fact, it was completely wrong.
00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:38.319
I think it was a cycle of those five things, or perhaps like you could potentially feel these things, these five things, but it's not gonna necessarily be in this order or whatever, it's a process, right?
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:40.000
And acceptance doesn't always come.
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:49.840
And acceptance is a word that is tritely given to our losses, where some losses we never get over, we never accept, right?
00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:58.000
And um, how can we accept something that's um that's been taken away that's no longer here?
00:02:58.560 --> 00:03:25.120
And I think that as I was talking to a friend about this, they said missing you, and I or missing someone, and I like that term missing someone because grief is so heavy, and it's such an intense word that feels so incredibly permanent, right?
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:42.080
And yet it's not capturing the possibility of connection that it still might exist for some people, and in some belief systems, right?
00:03:42.240 --> 00:04:01.120
In some belief systems, missing someone is a more appropriate way of describing this experience because there's there's connection even beyond an ending, a physical ending, there's a spiritual connection and continuation.
00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:06.719
And you know what better captures this than nature, right?
00:04:06.800 --> 00:04:18.079
Being in nature, and I wanted to start us off today with a favorite practice of mine, which is SOS breaths, okay?
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:28.480
And these are something that I came up with when I had some clients that needed some soothing, and I did as well, and we did these together in our groups.
00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:30.480
I call it our connection clubs.
00:04:30.639 --> 00:04:34.879
So in these connection clubs, we get together and we did what I call SOS breaths.
00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:44.000
And for those of you that like something visual, S is for strong, O is for or, and S is for stress.
00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:53.360
Okay, when you do these SOS breaths, one of the things you need to tell yourself is when I breathe in, I'm gonna breathe in through my nose.
00:04:54.959 --> 00:04:58.160
And when I breathe out, I'm gonna breathe out through my mouth.
00:05:00.480 --> 00:05:03.279
And you're gonna want to make some noise when you're doing this, okay?
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:09.759
This is something that if you you're not making noise, we don't know if you're actually breathing, okay?
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:16.160
So we wanna hear you breathe in your nose and breathe out your mouth.
00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:24.000
Okay, and when you breathe in, you can say the word inside your brain strong.
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:25.199
Strong.
00:05:27.199 --> 00:05:33.439
And you breathe out, you can say the word stress, stress, and breathe out.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:36.319
And when you breathe in, say the word strong.
00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:41.439
And when you breathe out, say the word stress.
00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:56.319
And the process of breathing in your nose brings the temperature of a cooler space into your body because you're usually in a space that's cooler than 98 degrees.
00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:02.480
So you can breathe, breathe in through your nose, and breathe out through your mouth.
00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:07.600
And I love SOS breasts because you can do them anywhere.
00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:17.360
You can do them in the bathroom, you can do them in the bedroom, you can do them in the office, you can do them in your car, you can do them at a stoplight, you can do them anytime, anywhere.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:18.720
SOS.
00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:31.120
I like strong or stress because it helps me to deliberately choose strength and stability and an anchor in the moment.
00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:54.800
And choosing to be strong is something that helps me process my loss and find that safe space because our emotions are really big when we're going through intense things, and when we're going through intense things, we need to give ourselves the space and the time to feel those things.
00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:08.720
And if you miss someone, it's because you loved really big, you experienced a great love, and you're gonna feel that as a loss at some point, okay?
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:18.399
And I have this love shark that um is really one of my favorite tools.
00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:22.319
Um very soothing, very grounding.
00:07:22.399 --> 00:07:33.120
It has one fin, it's missing one fin, but the fin that it's missing is this actually very grounding, um, rough spot that I kind of enjoy.
00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:46.160
It's a rough spot on the side of its body, and so there's the smooth velvet um tan and brown lines that I love of this beautiful love shark.
00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:49.600
And this little love shark experienced a loss, okay.
00:07:49.839 --> 00:07:54.800
Some of our losses are very physical and very obvious, okay.
00:07:55.040 --> 00:08:04.240
Um, and and some of them are less obvious, but um, it's important to name these losses for what they are.
00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:10.319
Sometimes in life we have what's called anticipatory grief, right?
00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:23.199
It's it's someone has not passed or we have not lost something, but it's inevitable that it might happen because of a sickness or because of the situation that someone's in, right?
00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:25.759
And so that's like anticipatory grief.
00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:27.120
That's one layer of it.
00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:30.639
Another layer could be ambiguous loss, right?
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:41.279
So some of us are having um ambiguous loss where it's something that no longer works the way it used to, our bodies are changing as we age.
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:44.399
It's a lot of ambiguous loss, okay?
00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:50.240
And it's it's a little bit of anticipatory grief as well, right?
00:08:50.639 --> 00:09:05.600
Um, so it's important when I first heard these terms, uh, it gave me a lot of peace and comfort to name that intense feeling that I had before something happened, and to know, oh, that's how I can explain it to myself.
00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:11.600
I was experiencing this as this was coming closer, right?
00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:17.759
Um, but one of the things I love about these little love sharks is just how soothing and calming they can be.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.720
If you're really upset, you can shake them.
00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:24.159
And um, shaking a love shark feels really good.
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:25.759
Um, not gonna lie.
00:09:25.919 --> 00:09:27.679
We've broken a few love sharks.
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:37.360
I had um Fred helped me fix a lot of these love sharks and would repair their little their little scales and get them back in working order.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:44.559
But um, these are the most soothing tools ever and super fun and really tactile.
00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:47.840
So if you like that tactile stuff, this could be for you.
00:09:48.159 --> 00:10:00.559
Um, but I just love how soothing and grounding it is, and you know, even though it has just one fin, um, it's still super soothing, super calming, one of my favorite toys.
00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:03.600
And um everyone should have one of these.
00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:05.519
Uh, if you don't have one, make one.
00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:13.279
Um, you know, go to your nearest craft store, get a bunch of these things, sticker things, and put them on.
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:20.559
Put them on, put them on your shark so that it could be happy, be a love shark that could ground you when you're experiencing an emotion.
00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:30.399
Because often what people don't talk about is maybe the anger that exists after a loss or an ambiguous loss or an actual loss.
00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:31.519
Um, the anger.
00:10:31.679 --> 00:10:41.919
There's a lot of anger, and one of the things that I had to process at one point in my life was my anger because anger is not something that you can just live with.
00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:50.879
Um, it will eat you up, it will spit you out, and it will treat you like one of these huge waves we're having right now in Southern California.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:54.879
There's these huge waves, they're 10 foot tall, they're really hard to survive.
00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:56.080
And so is your anger.
00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:09.360
Anger is not a safe emotion, it's not something that's gonna it's telling you that you're in a lot of pain and you're hurting, you should slow down, maybe stop, maybe pause, and don't talk to anyone because anger is that powerful.
00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:28.960
And um, I was really comfortable with my anger for the first part of my life, and then once I went through some loss, I realized how much that anger didn't serve me, and how much it really just set me back and interrupted um my life and didn't make my life as happy as it could have been.
00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:40.480
So one of the things I learned about anger is that you know, um you can process it and get rid of it by writing it down.
00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:48.480
And I know that sounds really boring, it's not a very appealing, attractive solution for a lot of people, but it works.
00:11:48.639 --> 00:11:55.360
And if you have a pen and a paper, piece of paper, in five minutes, all you need is five minutes.
00:11:55.600 --> 00:12:04.960
You can write down as much of the stuff as you're angry about on a piece of paper, and it can really help you process that stuff and get rid of it.
00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:10.320
Because once you write it down, you you name it, you own it, and it loses its power.
00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:15.679
You might need to break a few pens while you're at it, because that's what we do when we're angry, right?
00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:22.799
You might have a few pens or pencils and be using them, and you know, they might break, and and that's okay because we can replace those, right?
00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:36.879
We can't replace you, we we can't replace you, so you need to process your emotions when they're big because we all have them, and you know, I don't know, it's just one of those things.
00:12:37.039 --> 00:12:43.279
Um, angers there's that phrase that I keep having in my mind, I feel like I need to say it.
00:12:43.440 --> 00:12:56.879
It's you know, anger is like an acid, it does more um to the vessel that holds it than it does on anything that is it's poured on.
00:12:57.120 --> 00:13:00.720
Um it's it's really that dangerous.
00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:06.240
And anger is something that controls you.
00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:12.799
And if you want to change your anger, you can and you will.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:16.559
I believe in you, sunshine.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:57.600
I believe you can do this, I believe you can change it and make it a strength of yours because you know what it costs you when you're angry, and you know what that feels like, and the regret, and you know that that's not who you are anymore, and you know that you're moving to a better space with more control and more power, and in the powerful place that you're choosing to live now is a lot of scents that calm your nervous system and your limbic system because the power of our scents.
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:07.679
Did you know that the sense of smell is your only scent, it's one of your senses, the only one that is directly tied to your limbic system.
00:14:07.759 --> 00:14:13.039
So if you want to feel calm, smell something that's a positive, happy memory, right?
00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:19.279
So when I smell roses, it reminds me of my grandma's house.
00:14:19.519 --> 00:14:30.480
And she wasn't like an award-winning botanist or anything, but she had a few rose bushes in the front of her house, and I we didn't have those at my house.
00:14:30.559 --> 00:14:41.600
So when we went to grandma's house, I knew that um we were going to the nice garden, and she had roses, and so I always just thought, wow, she's she's got it all.
00:14:41.679 --> 00:14:42.799
Grandma's got it all.
00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:47.600
She's got the roses, the rose garden, and it brings me happy memories.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:56.240
And so roses, I love the smell of a good rose, and it instantly calms me because it's tied to my limbic system, right?
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:03.840
It's the sense of smell, and I try to have lots of smells that calm me and soothe me and travel with them too, right?
00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:08.320
Because the sense of smell is gonna calm your limbic system faster than anything else.
00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:16.240
So you can't always carry a rose with you, but you can easily carry one of these little rollerball things, right?
00:15:16.480 --> 00:15:23.200
These little guys, you just put them on, and um they smell really good, you know.
00:15:23.360 --> 00:15:23.840
Cinnamon.
00:15:23.919 --> 00:15:24.960
Who doesn't love cinnamon?
00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:26.559
I mean, some people don't.
00:15:26.879 --> 00:15:41.919
Um, there is definitely cinnamon allergies, but this one smells like cinnamon, and it's really awesome because it helps me think of the holidays and think of all the positive things with the holidays.
00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:43.120
So I love cinnamon.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:48.480
Cinnamon's a good one, and it's gonna directly calm my limbic system, okay?
00:15:48.639 --> 00:15:51.360
So I'm just saying there's a few things that you can do.
00:15:51.519 --> 00:16:00.399
You could put it on your love shark if you have a love shark, bring it for the kids, pretend it's for the kids, and you could use it yourself, you know.
00:16:00.559 --> 00:16:03.759
I'm just saying, if you have an animal, bring it for your dog.
00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:07.039
Maybe your dog needs a dog toy, and you might need it too.
00:16:07.120 --> 00:16:10.799
So I'm just saying, think outside the box, right?
00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:15.679
We broke that thing the moment we were born, so let's just think outside of it, okay?
00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:22.080
Now, before we get too long-winded, I wanted to share also one more thing.
00:16:22.399 --> 00:16:34.559
Is when I was going through an intense period of change, and things just fell apart for me, and I just didn't really know which way was up anymore.
00:16:34.639 --> 00:16:52.320
And I was trying to navigate that for myself and give myself control in my pain because I wanted to control and I wanted to name that feeling and that experience, and one of the things that I did was hang up this art piece.
00:16:52.559 --> 00:17:02.960
Now I took this art piece right here, it was an empty canvas at the time, and I hung it up in my house and put it on a wall.
00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:06.960
Uh, I think I hung it up by my front door because that's the only wall space I had.
00:17:07.200 --> 00:17:14.640
So I put this big canvas that was totally blank right by my front door and hung it up and started to paint.
00:17:14.880 --> 00:17:35.039
I didn't know how to paint, I just knew that I felt a lot of feelings that I was feeling, and I wanted to get them out and express them, and I didn't even know how to paint water or what it was, I just knew it was the color blue, so I bought a few pieces of blue, paint, acrylic paint, and painted what I thought was water.
00:17:35.119 --> 00:17:40.799
So I painted, you know, back and forth, and just you know, I painted the water.
00:17:40.960 --> 00:17:45.440
And so what I did is I painted.
00:17:45.759 --> 00:17:50.160
And then once I, you know, this went on for a few years.
00:17:50.240 --> 00:17:52.000
Um, it took me a few years, right?
00:17:52.240 --> 00:18:11.599
And what I did was painting helped me relieve some of my stress, it helped me cope with my stress and cope with the feelings I was having, and it helped me find the range of calm that I could live on, the new range of calm that I needed to find in order to anchor myself.
00:18:11.839 --> 00:18:44.880
And eventually I added some gold leaf and other things to it, and it became a staple for me, and it became something that I could do with other people, and that I've since done with a lot of people, and has made me really happy and helped people process their loss and their pain, and find a voice for that pain or that loss, and it's been a really powerful thing for me, and I would love to share it with you sometime.
00:18:45.039 --> 00:18:56.079
So, check out my um my website if you want to hear about where one of those classes might be offered at a beach city near you.
00:18:56.240 --> 00:19:04.240
You can go to Emily, you can go to emanate love.org and or you could email me as well, and it's all on the website there.
00:19:04.559 --> 00:19:10.400
But I want to thank you so much for tuning in today.
00:19:11.039 --> 00:19:17.680
I'm grateful for this space of difference and of love that we've been able to share together today.
00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:22.720
And I hope that those SOS breaths come in helpful sometime for you.
00:19:23.119 --> 00:19:27.759
And I just want you to remember that you are strong and you got this sunshine.
00:19:27.920 --> 00:19:29.200
We'll see you next week.
