► Tell us about you and your podcast
Eric started the podcast back in 2013 and first interviewed Jared Scheffler with Whitetail Adrenaline. Since then the Okayest Hunter podcast has evolved into a LIVE broadcast podcast that takes calls from hunters across the US. Our listeners are primarily deer hunters, but also just love deer camp, and everything outdoors!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
The podcast was started to build a community of like minded hunters, to learn, and embrace the outdoors and hunting. Our initial goals were to relate to hunters by talking with them directly as well as educating them by chatting with industry experts. The podcast first aired in 2013 and we got really consistent starting in 2019 by recording LIVE every Tuesday night.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We burn the candle stick on both ends and record every Tuesday night. Some weeks we record more episodes, but you can always find a new episode Tuesday evenings. We probably spend 5 hours a week on the podcast.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We gain what we call, ROR or Return on Relationship. We've made friends and have had some memorable experiences as a result of podcasting. Heck, we've met business partner that were listeners and also met our co-hosts as a result from podcasting. It's even helped land a career in the outdoor space!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We use a number of software tools such as, Call-in-Studio for our LIVE listener calls. We broadcast via Restream to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter and then we also use OBS that helps display our Mevo multi-camera setup. From there, we use Adobe Audition for our audio production that takes our audio from our Rodecaster Pro.
► How do you market your show?
Our show is marketed heavily through our social media outlets like Instagram, and TikTok. We use Descript to clip our long form content into small clips that we publish as reels and short form snackable content. We also run a weekly e-blast that acts as it's own form of content. We also have a loyal following of people that imbue our brand ethos and share with them via our private FB group.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Create a framework for consistency. If you can't be consistent, you'll struggle to be successful. Be yourself and get comfortable in your skin. If you're not authentic in your approach, listeners can pick up on it. If you're uncomfortable, it'll be uncomfortable to listen to.
