► Tell us about you and your podcast
We met at age of 17, while working in a beauty supply store. Our friendship has that has lasted our entire lives. While we took separate paths after graduation, our friendship has always been an underlying current in their lives. Climbing the corporate ladder, marriage, motherhood, divorce, and even the death of two husbands we have been through it all. In this podcast, they will share our advice and experience. Like their friendship our always been, we will tell it Honestly Unfiltered.
While our target audience is women our age, we have had men and women of all ages listening to the show. Anyone can benefit from our knowledge of the subjects we are discussing.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Our friends and family have been telling us for a long time that we have great chemistry as friends and are very funny (their words not ours). After being told this so much we decided to give it a go. At the end of the day, we hope that our life experiences will help other people with theirs. We have both experienced great triumph and great tragedy in our lives, if there is any message that we can send is that there is hope. No matter what anyone is going through, it can get better... this to shall pass and if you can laugh through it... that will help ease the burden.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We are both full time professionals. We record on Saturday or Sunday for an episode to launch on Monday. It is a tight turnaround but we work better under pressure, so it is about a 1-2 day turnaround time. Our episodes are as we say "honestly unfiltered" which means we go with what is recorded and do not spend hours piecing recordings together. We give it a run through to make sure that everything recorded in good quality, make a few tweaks to sound and add in the music. We fund the podcast ourselves and market it though social media outlets.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
While we both regularly see a therapist talking it out among your friends is sometimes the best therapy right? We have always benefited in our friendship by talking together through our issues. In the recent weeks Jeni has gone through some personal struggles that she has shared. We are booking guests for our show and hope to also learn from their experiences.
We would love to be sponsored one day but as of right now our audience is still pretty small. We are six episodes in but we are growing.. we have gone from about 20 downloads a week to 110 which is still small but the growth is positive and encouraging.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We try to record in person but that is not always possible since we live 45 minutes away from one another. When in person we record directly into Apple GarageBand using XLR type microphones into a Focusrite Scarlet 4x4 audio interface and when we record remotely or doing an interview with a guest who lives further away, we use Squadcast. We have experimented with other remote recording software and feel that Squadcast gives us the best quality.
If we are interviewing a guest, we do as much research as we can about them and the same for a specific subject matter that we are discussing. We have been known to show up with not a thing on the agenda and go from there.
► How do you market your show?
We are on all of the major podcasting platforms. 56% of our listeners come from Apple Podcasts. The rest come from Spotify, iHeart Radio, Google Podcasts and our RSS feed on our website www.keriandjeni.com.
We find that we are receiving the most listeners from Instagram.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
We started recording a few weeks before we actually launched to test everything out. We didn't use those episodes but used some of the material for a trailer. We saw that we were dragging our feet a bit so we launched a trailer and set a launch date for the episode and put our feet to the fire so to speak. Having a Monday release date every week keeps us accountable to put out new material.
If you do not try you will never know what could happen. Even if only 5 people listen to your show, that will eventually lead to more. We joined Facebook groups for beginning podcasters and listened to their peaks and pitfalls along the way which helped us. Most importantly.. have fun!
