► Tell us about you and your podcast
I've spent over 30 years in the fitness industry across teaching group fitness, personal training, management and entrepreneurship. I started this podcast after my personal experience of peri-menopause hormones and lack of information propelled me to search for the science on ageing, particularly for women.
My listeners are predominantly female, 45+, possibly experiencing menopause and all the challenges they face physically, mentally and emotionally.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast after 32 years of full time work and I just wanted to take a break and do something completely different, learn some new skills and have inspiring conversations with women who were experiencing the same challenges as I was having with menopause.
I listen to a number of podcasts, at least 2-3x/week and I enjoy 30 minute formats as I feel they work well for the distances I need to drive and for walking my dog.
My initial goals for the podcast was to bring light and information to an area of ageing for women that has very little conversation and lots of confusion. I wanted those conversations to inform, educate and inspire.
I started my podcast on March 1st 2021 and I released my first episode on March 2nd.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release a new episode weekly. I have managed to get the total time for each episode down to 5 hours (arrange interview, interview, edit audio and video, create socials and launch). I am not currently employed so I am enjoying this opportunity to earn something new and fulfil my passion to release a podcast. This is a self funded project but I believe that it could be sponsored/monetised as the downloads are doing well.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I'm currently not sponsored for this episode and would consider partners that align well with my audience. My podcast has been running for ONE month and has had 1800 downloads so I am really excited that so many are getting something from the content I am creating. This podcast has brought a lot of light to my life in a really challenging time (pandemic). I feel proud of myself for learning so many new skills (podcasting, editing audio and video, develop marketing and social media).
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use Anchor.fm to develop my podcast. I record my interviews on Zoom and record the interview for video. I use iMovie to edit video and launch on YouTube. Anchor.fm has a simple audio editing feature. I use Canva for social media and WordPress for my website.
My guests are predominantly people I have met through the years in the health and fitness industry. Each guest is recommending someone else that they feel would bring value to the podcast so I am really grateful for that.
Podcast preparation - I have a curated email that I send to each guest outlining the flow of the interview and they will book a day/time on Calendly. It's important that we do discuss any peri-menopause or menopause symptoms they have encountered as this brings authenticity to the discussions.
► How do you market your show?
Listeners can find my show on at least a dozen Podcast sites. Most listeners are using Spotify (40%) and Apple Podcasts (40%) but I have just added the episodes to more sites so that may change in the next month or so.
I use the following to market the podcast - Website (Wordpress), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Twitter
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
As a new podcaster, I'm learning new things every day and I am constantly writing notes on things I want to improve. My big take out is, if you are wanting everything to be perfect, you will hesitate to launch. If it's "good enough" and you get your message across, just publish it! You can go back and fix things later on.
The biggest help for me to launch was though a friend that has a podcast already. He outlined the most important things to focus on and also set my launch date! I felt compelled to follow through as he had set a goal for me!
