► Tell us about you and your podcast
The podcast is about true stories that people have no explanation for. Whether it is a ghost encounter, a Bigfoot sighting, an alien abduction, or something that might fall into a conspiracy theory, we interview the individuals then write a narrative that is more than just somebody retelling an event. We look at the facts and circumstances surrounding the event and research information from reliable sources that sometimes contradict popular beliefs. The narrator is a veteran entertainer in Las Vegas and has produced several audiobooks on Amazon.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
The episodes take much longer to produce than normal podcasts. They have to be researched, written, rewritten, edited, recorded and produced. Usually completely done by the narrator. The podcast was started in 2020 during the lockdowns and was a response to the blatant censorship of truth on social media. There is a narrative being pushed by mainstream media and the agenda is to completely stop people from asking questions and seeking answers. These podcasts ask the hard questions and try to provide possible answers without being dogmatic in the conclusions. Some may find it hard to hear a theory that goes against what they have been told to believe.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
It will take about 30 days of research and editing to produce one episode. This podcast is completely funded by Matthew Newbold. Currently a full time worship leader at a non-denominational Church, working weekends playing piano and singing at Dueling Pianos and Piano bars on the Las Vegas strip on Fridays and Saturdays, producing Audiobooks for ACX, and a full time husband and father of 3 young boys.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
At this current time, Scary but True Campfire Stories does not have sponsorship. The benefits from producing these episodes is that is connects people to the stories and gives them a clean and entertaining listening experience that I have not found in most scary podcasts. I want my kids to be able to listen to these stories as we would tell similar stories at Trail Life campouts.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I usually interview guests using a handheld recorder so I can get the most information from their point of view as well as ask questions that might clarify events for the writing process. I then look up the history of their particular scenario, whether it be from UFOlogists or the local legend in their area. I spend weeks writing the outline, writing the story, using as much of the interviewers mannerisms as possible, editing and rehearsing. I have a full professional vocal studio that I use for recording vocals. Studio One Pro, 4 X 4 Professional vocal booth, Neumann TLM 103 Microphone with incredible sound isolation. All music is copyrighted by Matthew Newbold.
► How do you market your show?
18% of listeners come from Spotify, 15% from IHeart Radio, 7% from Apple podcasts, 6% from Audible and over 53% from other sources. I try to have as many platforms as possible so it is easy to find. I have a camping Youtube channel that I promote the podcast as well.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
A good podcast grows slowly. A great podcast will be criticized and have some 1 star ratings. Haters don't bother posting their "thoughts and disagreements" with a show that they don't see going anywhere. Take the time to produce great content and not just as many episodes as possible. Most of us produce these on our spare time so make it as good as possible. Do not skimp on the quality of the sound. Consumers are used to quality and will notice the content if the quality is good. If the quality is not good, they will never be able to focus on the content.
