► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hey, I'm Elliot.
I'm an Australia born guy, living in London, UK. My Podcast tells the forgotten stories of those whose actions shaped the world. You won't find stories from stuffy old politicians here. Instead, listen in for tales of Forsaken Heretics, Dastardly Pirates, Cannibal Emperors and Onion Farmers turned World Conquerors!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I had the idea for this podcast a few years ago when I learnt the story of Skanderbeg, the Albanian hero who held back the Ottomans in the 15th century.
From there, I came across the story of The Last Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI and Roman Emperor Aurelian.
Slowly, I began to discover that almost every country had a national hero who was well known domestically, yet relatively unknown internationally.
I started my podcast back in March 2020 and my first episode took me around 6 months as I went back and forth over and over, trying to sound like Dan Carlin, ha.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release episodes fortnightly, but will try and get something out in-between if I've got time.
I research and write the show during my leisure time, I splash out a little on advertising and some creative tools to create social content for Instagram. Its all self-funded, and very much a passion project.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I'm not sponsored, but I've met lots of very friendly history podcasters across the world. Its been a great way to stay social during lockdown, particularly as I don't know many people in the UK.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use a Yeti Blue Mini microphone, an ancient laptop and Adobe Audition to edit. I'm new to guest appearances, but those that I do speak with I meet through Instagram. When we chat, we use Zoom.
To prepare for a recording session I usually just have a big bottle of water ready.
► How do you market your show?
As my show is based on countries, there are big interests in individual episodes from that specific country. However, many people only wish to hear 'their' hero and may not stick around for another episode. That's ok though, I'm glad there's something for everyone.
The majority of my listeners come through iTunes about 60%, then its a close tie between Google and Spotify, with the miscellaneous ones coming after.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Honestly, just start. Your first episode will not be perfect and you can go back to re-record it later. Focus on your content and make it engaging. You should feel a sense of pride after you've finished an episode. Afterall, you just created something!
Reddit is ok for general advice, don't get bogged down in other people's opinions though. Stick to whatever brand comes naturally to you, and don’t smooth over the rough edges that makes your show unique.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
I post almost daily on Instagram @anthologyofheroes
But my website, has a bit more to it also anthologyofheroespodcast.com
