► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Rashad Wardhana. I am the host of Pengsu Podcast, also the creative and the editor. I work with Yudha and Farras as my co-hosts. Also, there is Salman as the publisher team. These are my friends from high school. We made this podcast because we think that we always have a lot to talk about when we hang out, so we feel like we have to get it out with this podcast. We talk stuff like day-to-day basis, friendships, college, and some other trending topics to pick on. Who would listen to this? Probably college students that want to relate what is going on. Also high school students that are searching for experiences, and adults who are trying to reminisce the old days. Pengsu Podcast aims to the wider audience. We discuss a lot of stuff with fun bits here and there. And we hope that our listeners wouldn't just get entertained, but also earn some knowledge and experiences from us.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Pengsu Podcast were made solely because of our feelings to get things out of our chests. When we hangout we always talk about a lot of stuff that can actually be useful to others. So, we made the idea. Why not do a podcast?
I, myself, listen to a quite amount of podcasts. I listen to tech podcasts, entertainment news, and celebrity news also. Just to keep up with the world. And I feel like I got a lot because of that. So, I think, us doing podcast, could help a lot of people too.
My goals doing podcast is basically to have fun. But, on the way of doing that, I hope that I could give something useful to people who listens and be more open minded to discussions.
We started in April 2020. So, it has been two months. To release the first episode was very quick. My friend and co-hosts tweeted that he wanna do podcast. So, I said let's do it. Farras replied too. Then, out of nowhere, a group chat was made. I said let's test it. After testing it for a few minutes, we started to record ourselves. A few days later we release it and it became a routine. You just have to start basically. Just start. Things will go after that.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release an episode every week. It doesn't take very long actually. Most of the times, Yudha just comes up with an idea and then I developed it. I wrote the rundown and scripts. Then, we start recording.
We record every saturday nights and friday nights. So, it wouldn't be in any distractions for us to do our things and daily activities.
Yes, I fund this podcast myself. We ourselves invest in mics. So, I think I already spent like 100$ for mics and I think that's it. I may have use some for marketing in social media but only once in a while. Not very much actually. We just emphasize on the topics and discussions. Also the editing.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We would like to take sponsorhips. But, for now I don't think it is necessary. Because we want to make sure our viewers are there and we don't want them to click away because of ads yet.
So far podcasting has been benefiting me non-financially. It has been teaching me public speaking, continues talking, connection with friends, and basically just be more confident. Also, it teaches me to be more creative and hard working. The excitement doing this beats all the things.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I am using an entry level mic such as BM800 because I'm still on the starting point. But, I use pre-amps so I can make sure it has sufficient power. And so far, it sounds good.
Lately we've been doing a lot of interview. But, because mostly they are our friends, it doesn't really need any hard approach. But, for the future, I'll be using email and other business contact platform for the more important and high-end people to interview.
I prepare my episodes with rundown and a little brief before the session begins. I make sure that we all recording with my co-hosts. As soon as everything feel ready, we start recording.
We interview people through discord. Why? Because it has a good recording bot. It's better than any free call software. And I can edit the audio in post because it records the voice of each person.
► How do you market your show?
We mainly use Instagram to promote our show. We post trailers and contents to make our show interesting. We use Instagram because the community uses Instagram. Also we use Line Square to keep updated with the podcast community. So far Instagram is the most helpful one, because our own main account already has audience so it's easier to get announced. But, we also post on LINE SQUARE which is a platform for podcasters. In there we share our podcasts to support each other.
In listener perspective, because we know what platform the audience mostly use for listening to songs, we are more oriented to promote the spotify. Based on stats, 90%+ of our listeners uses spotify. So, yeah. Not, that any other platforms are bad. We just know what our markets are.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I didn't think this would go very well. There will ups and downs. But, you just gotta keep going. Keep the positivity. If you keep going, along you go, you will understand what you really want. I learned a lot of things. A lot. Like speaking, doing interview, quality control, working together, and others. It has helped me getting experience in a working environment. And it also keeps my friendships from high school. The more I do this, the stronger connections I got.
If you wanna make quality podcast, my first advice would be just start. Your first ones will not be good. I guaranteed. But, along you go, you know what to do. If you want reference, I can give you examples like Matt D'Avella, Sara Dietschy, and others like them. They are high quality podcast you can refer to if you wanna learn the technicality. For production and creativity, you can learn from Joe Rogan.
