► Tell us about you and your podcast
I've been doing commentaries and podcasts on NPR stations for ten years. I'm a professor of communications and just enjoy good stories that are riveting because their so intellectually profound or because they are damn important but unknown. Most of the people in my audience are life-long learners who are exceptionally open-minded and feel that they can never know enough. A beautiful life is one in which learning never ends.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I had been doing a podcast for some years for Texas Standard that was called Stories from Texas: some of them are true. It consisted of great Texas stories about its culture and history, famous people and iconic brands. It became quite popular in Texas and with Texans abroad (Texpatriates), but I there so many good stories in the world that I didn't want to get corralled by my theme. I decided to launch Beyond Texas so I'd be free to go wherever the good stories were.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
This is my hobbycast. I just do it on my own with some funding from Patrion via the listeners who like it. I began with a podcast a week and have continued that pace for about 8 months. Right now I"m taking a month off, but will be back at it soon.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I love sharing inspirational stories - stories that amaze and shock and inspire and amuse. I also enjoy the art of storytelling and so, like a musician, I strive to master the art form in content, rhythm and tone. I strive for good sound that animates the story.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I have a studio in my home. I typically do my research and package into a story - and then I record it in as conversational a manner as I can. Next I edit it sometimes including music and complimentary effects (if possible). Once in a while I'll include an interview.
► How do you market your show?
I just post it on my FB, Twitter and LInked-In pages.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Get good sound. Concentrate a great deal on production values. But... if your content isn't special, great sound alone will not save you.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
