► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I love podcasts. I listen to a ton of different podcasts from storytelling, entrepreneurship, self-help, news, personal development, and many more.
I started this podcast because I realized that women hold themselves back in their corporate careers and may not even be aware that they are doing so. I want women to become aware that there are many ways in which they can take action to move up the corporate ladder. Women lack the confidence to advocate for themselves and I wanted to create a platform to give them actionable ways that can be implemented in their careers for advancement.
I'm on the bottom end of my career. I've been in the corporate world for 30 years. I felt a calling to help those women coming up behind me just as so many women did before me.
I started my podcast in January of 2022 and finally released it in May of 2022. I had a huge learning curve in creating my first podcast. I'm on episode 30 and I've learned a ton. I'm still learning but I've come along way already.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
My podcast is weekly and published on Fridays. It takes me a couple of hours to record the episode and then I record the intro and recap separately. I have a production company that creates the audio, youtube, and blog for me. I wouldn't be able to do all that myself.
I funded the podcast myself. I have a full-time job so I interview and prepare my episodes for production during evenings and weekends. The average podcast is about $175 per episode which is what the production company charges me.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Right now, I'm still growing my audience. I don't have sponsors or ads. I have no revenue yet. Since May, my podcast has about 1,600 downloads. It's been listened to in 22 countries.
The podcast benefits me by having amazing conversations with phenomenal women that can share their expertise with my listeners. At this point, I'm just providing value and want to serve my community. It also builds credibility for me and I enjoy doing it.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
At the moment, I do all my interviews on Zoom with video. I hand everything over to the production company and they do the rest. I find guests on LinkedIn, Matchmaker.FM and referrals.
I always have a 15-minute pre-call with each guest to make sure that they are a good fit. I know it's a lot more work but I also find that the pre-call helps me pinpoint good topics for the actual episode recording. I review their bios, think of creative topics to discuss. I record the intro and recap after the episode recording. I also request that the guest provide 2 actionable tips for the guests on the relevant topic. I then gather all the information the production company needs and upload all that. The Monday following the podcast, I feature the guest on LinkedIn and other social media.
My CRM remind guests or their scheduled session. I provide with preparation tips and reminders before the recording. I send them a thank you note after the recording.
On the day the episode publishes, the production company sends them an email with links and social media assets to share the podcast.
► How do you market your show?
I market my show on social media on Mondays. I loop in the guest so that they can comment and share it with their network. I post the feature on LinkedIn, FB, IG, TT, Pinterest, and Twitter. The video episode is loaded on YouTube by my production company. I also send an email to my email list as well.
For me, the marketing channels I find most useful are LinkedIn and YouTube.
I'm not to the point where I've figured out anything about listener acquisition yet.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My advice is to do it! You don't know what benefits you will get from being a podcast host until you are one. I've made some great relationships with my guests. I'm also finding that I can create additional content from each podcast recording. I couldn't do what I do without the production company. They have really helped a ton.
There is a podcast called 'Feed Your Brand' as well as 'The Binge Factor' that are fantastic. A great book is Podcast Guest Profits by Tom Schwab.
