► Tell us about you and your podcast
The three of us are longtime hockey fans who are very active in the Arizona sports/ Coyotes hockey sphere. We've had several discussions and started to become friends which led to us playing video games together which led to the idea of starting a podcast. We aim to be the podcast the Coyotes fandom deserves. We're also covering Arizona hockey in general which includes the great division 1 hockey program from Arizona State University and will also cover big, breaking NHL news.
Our listeners are Coyotes and other hockey fans who want a break from the corporate news style hockey podcasts. We may be fans but we research and make sure we put on professional style opinions and our own personality onto the show. We each offer a piece that completes and compliments the style of each other which we like to say creates a "bar side" chat with buddies talking hockey.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
As I alluded to in the section above, it all started with a twitter group chat created by whom we call "The Godfather of AZ Sports". He's created a large group chat for all four of the major sports in Arizona which has tons of engagement in the sphere. We started to game together and the Chirpin Yotes was passed around. The three of us are huge podcast listeners with Grandy being the biggest hockey podcast fan I've ever met. I listen to a larger variety and chase frequently listens to podcasts as well.
We started back in February. The idea was passed around for a few weeks, a bit of a joke and then we really sat down and talked about it and a few weeks later we recorded episode 1! I was in a very echoey room (lol) so the audio wasn't the best but the show premiered!
Our goal is to be the best Coyotes/hockey podcast from the great state forty eight and grow as large as we possibly can! WE truly have our hearts in this and put the most we can into each episode.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We aim for weekly during the season. We have "pre-meetings" I call them just before we actually record to get all notes and topics in order. when we record I personally do the editing of the podcast.
We definitely try and make it work. we usually get off in late afternoons at the latest so the schedule typically works out. few misses here and there.
We are entirely self-funded. we pool money in and it's worked so far. We've put in a couple hundred dollars so far.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We definitely take sponsors and we would definitely share revenue if that were to happen and we hope it does!
Repp Sports brand has given us a promo code for their energy drink and that's so far the only "sponsor" we've had so far. We have about 80-90 downloads so far a month and growing fast.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use my MacBook Pro and GarageBand for editing. We use a Discord bot named Craig for recording and then I'll get the file and get to editing.
We've had the guy responsible for the friendship on, my cousin who is a captain for a local amateur hockey league team so far! we pick guests we we know personally and think they would be fun to have on. Our dream is to interview an NHL hockey player.
We use Discord, no in-person meetings at this time
► How do you market your show?
We're very active on Twitter and other socials that's our main way of advertising thus far. I believe RSS also helps out with that as well. RSS also breaks down the analytics and I check them 2-3 times a week. We're on Spotify and Google Podcasts but Apple Podcasts is our most popular by a good margin.
I think twitter/Facebook are really good marketing channels. most people nowadays have one or both and thanks to Facebook having the Groups feature it's even easier.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Make sure your sound quality is decent! The nice logo and stuff like that can come later sound is everything! we were fortunate to know a graphic designer who loved our concept to make the logo for us. Also don't be afraid to get started, take the jump! As Phoenix Suns coach says "what you want is on the other side of hard" It won't always be easy but it'll be worth it! Let your personality shine too, its what will make you stand out in a saturated market.
I watched and listen to a lot of podcast before but even more so after podcasting. I also watched a lot of videos on active listening, and interviews so I can sharpen my skills! Conan O'Brian is a FANTASTIC active listener and has helped me tons. I also have streamed on twitch as a hobby which helped me get used to talking to someone I can't see directly.
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
our twitter feeds! (@LegendofTyler, @agrandy099 and @chase.tomlinson) or the Chirpin Yotes feed (@chirpinyotespod) or our Facebook page for the podcast! all updates will be on there! We plan on setting up a blog/website eventually and a twitch channel.
