► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Lauren Campbell and I am a teen podcaster! My podcast is called QuaranTEEN. QuaranTEEN is an informational podcast made by teens, for teens. It's designed to entertain them and teach them during quarantine!
My listeners are basically 45% adults in their thirties and 45% teenagers. The rest is every age group in between. You might be surprised to know that 69% of my listeners are in France. I have no idea why. I don't even speak French!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast during the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown solely for the purpose of entertaining myself. I always loved listening to podcasts, so I thought I should give it a try! I soon learned my love for podcasting, and didn't want to stop! Some goals I've reached include hitting 1,000 downloads and having multiple purchases on my merchandise (teepublic.com/stores/quaranteen-podcast). I am definitely still a small podcaster, but I'm enjoying growth and learning from my mistakes! It took me a few days to release my first episode, and I've been making them ever since March 23, 2020.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I originally didn't have much to do, but once online school started, it was definitely a battle for how to manage my time. I normally tried to record two of the three episodes I would do that week over the weekend. Eventually, I cut down to two episodes per week, and that significantly helped my productivity and the quality of the episodes.
For funding, I have received monthly and one-time donations from some of my listeners, which helped me get a good quality microphone after about ten episodes.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I do take sponsorships. I currently have two sponsors: Anchor (anchor.fm) and Knockback (store.steampowered.com). I host my podcast with Anchor because it's free, so they automatically sponsor you. Knockback is an early-access video game made by a family friend of mine, so we mutually agreed that if I helped advertise his podcast, I would make $20 CPM.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use the MAONO PM401 USB Microphone Kit (amazon link). It is great and affordable!
When it comes to interviews, I normally interview people I know, but I have reached out to people I've found on social media for other interviews. I typically use the Recording with Friends feature on Anchor, but am thinking of using Zoom or Skype in the future.
► How do you market your show?
I market my show mostly through social media and email campaigns. I only have two people on my current email list, so that doesn't prove to be super effective. Social media, specifically Facebook is where I have expanded my listeners a lot. I joined lots of podcasting groups and have found that to be very helpful! I've also joined Pinterest recently, which is such a useful marketing tool! I have an ad campaign going on there, and it's spread a lot of awareness about my podcast.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I would tell new podcasters that making a podcast really isn't that hard, and it's fun! I think one of the most important things I learned is to stay consistent with your schedule!
