► Tell us about you and your podcast
My mission is to study emotions and well-being both from a practical and a theoretical perspective. I am a PhD student in psychology at the University of Oxford, where I understand the mind and brain through a scientific lens. But science alone is not enough to give us emotional fulfilment. So I have also studied emotions with therapists, coaches, and even monks. In this podcast, I talk about emotions on all levels -- I talk about the theory and how all suffering comes from the sense of a self, to the practical on how to deal with and manage anger!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Understanding happiness and emotions has been one of the top questions that humanity has ever asked. I have been fortunate enough to learn about psychology and emotions from the best of minds, and I have been a long term meditator myself. So I was acquiring all of this knowledge and I felt the need to share it with the world. I started my podcast last year in February. It took me a good few days to release my first episode. I was super shy in the beginning, but now I'm able to record episodes with minimal anxiety :)
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I am a full time PhD student and I have limited time for side hustles. But I reserve the last weekend of every month to record this show. I fund this podcast myself for now but the expenses are quite minimal.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
The main benefits of podcasting is that I get to organise and share my thinking. I am constantly learning about emotions, and it can often end up being a bit of a hodge podge. I get to organise my thoughts around a certain topic through my podcast, and then build a narrative around it for my listeners. I don't gain any financial rewards, but I do get extremely moving listener comments. Knowing that I touched a life or two is quite satisfying.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I first start by writing my script in Scrivener. I sometimes use Roam Research to outline an episode. Then I go through my draft and make edits. Once I am happy with the script, which is usually after 2 revisions at most, I record the episode using a Samson C01u and Audacity. Then I publish on Acast and create an instagram story to let my friends know that a new episode is out.
► How do you market your show?
I mostly have not marketed the show and it is crazy to see all the growth that has happened organically. I create an Instagram and Facebook story after I publish every episode, and often I post the episode on reddit.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I would say new podcasters should aim for imperfection. The pursuit of perfection stops people from putting their voice out, and when you no longer aim to be perfect, a lot of content will naturally come through you!
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
My website http://sankalpgarud.org has my podcast, blog, and all relevant links to subscribe. The podcast itself is available on iTunes, Spotify, and most podcast players of choice. Besides, I'm on twitter @sankalp35
