► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm a psychotherapist with over 40 years of working to help people with their relationships. I've been podcasting for 6+ years trying to reach a broader audience with relationship wisdom. I do a podcast of substance whether it is just me or someone wonderful to interview. Young couples, particularly in years 6-10 which is an ordinary time for relationships to fall apart. Any age can benefit, including those dating.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I am 69 & want a legacy. I do podcasts to have meaning & try to make a bit of the world a better place. Relationships are the most important part of life & I can help people get them right. I am not trying to make a dime, there are no ads. April 22, 2015 I released 3 episodes. I paid for coaching, took courses probably for 6 months prior.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release one quality episode a month & it gets social media treatment the entire month. I am not retired & need time to create substance, every week I spend several hours. I fund it entirely & consider it my way to volunteer. Honestly I don't add up the costs & I just spent $315. revamping the podcast page on my website which has over 450 pages of free info without ads. I spent $199. getting a new design for my podcast cover.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Zero revenue. My latest episode has 4,125 for 10 1/2 days as of today 9/11. With 84 episodes I have just crossed over 500,000 downloads. I learn from my guests so I believe my audience does too. I really enjoy giving people new & fresh ways to think about things.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
RODE Podcaster mic & focusrite scarlett audio interface & sound tiles stuck to the walls of a room in my basement. I use Hindenberg for editing & just joined riverside.fm for recording my guests, Libsyn as my host & for my APP. I do research on topics before I write the script which I turn over to guests beforehand for fix ups (very rare). If it's a solo show I usually start with an idea from my private practice couples & then build it over time. I always have a script for a solo show stashed. I don't use AI for transcribing but pay a woman from Nigeria on Fiver.
► How do you market your show?
Apple Podcasts, Chrome & iHeartRadio are my largest listener sources. I find twitter with captioned audiograms as the best social media platform, & I use pinterest, linked in & instagram but twitter is daily with social jukebox releasing & I release the audiograms myself every a.m
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
ShePodcasts is a wonderful FB forum where I still pick up new ideas. The courses by Else & Jess were well worth it. It helps to have a topic you have some passion for in order to get through the hard times. Once a month while still working is an unusual choice & it has totally made my life have balance. I think the most important 2 things any podcaster can do is #1. Quality Content & #2.Take sound quality seriously. I hate Tech & I keep pushing my boundaries to learn more to produce a quality show. Two reviews complained about my voice which I deeply wish was more radio-cool but oh well, I persevere because I offer a unique way to look at relationships. Getting relationships right is the most important part of life.
