► Tell us about you and your podcast
I owned a chain of comedy clubs for the 80's & 90's and not only collected hours of comedy material; but formed relationships with comedians from all over the country. Every week is either a terrific set of comedy performed live on stage or an interview with a professional entertainer. I even add "Bonus" comedy bits every other Wednesday. My listeners are anyone who enjoys live standup comedy, the interviews share backstage stories from those who lived it, and the live comedy sets share up to an hour of laughter. Mostly good clean comedy for all to enjoy!
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I had written a book about my 40+ years in the business, and my wife openly mocked me and said no one would read my book...Ha! She recommended doing a podcast...I said "What's a podcast?" Ha! I did my research over several months and lunched in March of 2020 (pre-covid) and have had a show every week since. I launched with 4 shows and have produced 82 so far, 65 of which are out there and over 16,800 downloads so far; but still short of my goal, going for 1,000 week!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I funded this myself, and as an entrepreneur who has started over a dozen companies, it was easy for me to focus and build this company. I do also operate an insurance agency; but this is a labor of love, and I make time to keep it going strong. I love the arts, and consider standup comedy and important one! Yes, i fund it myslef and have invested over $8,000 so far of my own money; but i have had one paid Sponsor and hope to find other ways to monetize all this. I am launching video access and an online comedy course soon.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I absolutely am enjoying connecting and interviewing old comedy Friends, editing the comedy sets, and sharing the amazing gift of laughter....it is a joy! I was lucky to find a Friend who owned a company to sponsor me early one, and their small investment allowed me to purchase the equipment to do this well. I average just under 300 downloads per show, and have not had a Sponsor in quite a while...looking for ways to monetize now....ideas?
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use a RODE system to record, professional mics, and edit on Garage Band...been easy and sounds good. I hooked up with Buzzsprout early on and they have helped a lot. In addition, I have joined a few of the Steve olsher programs which helped me along. I prepare by doing research before every interview, and as a professional Guest, i listen to the podcast and research the creators who have me on their podcasts. Most of my interviews have been over the phone; but prefer live in person interviews of which i have done several.
► How do you market your show?
I use social media to market, ran a few Overcast ads, and ran a small ad in the new Podcast Directory released by Steve Olsher. I tried one Spotify audio ad, and did something on Podcast Addict. I am always looking for ways to market my shows and hopefully eventually monetize to get back some of what has been invested. I do not have a breakdown of how/why certain marketing plans work...my best has been the overcast ads.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Don't talk about it...do it! if you have something to share that might be of value to others, get it out there; but i do recommend to plan ahead and make sure you wish to continue the work. So many podcasts do a few shows and disappear...just clogs up the directories; so I recommend if you are going to have a podcast....commit!
► Where can we learn more about you & your podcasts?
standupcomedyyourhostandmc.com I am linked to all major directories (Spotify, Google, Apple, Stitchers, iHeart, Pandora, and more!). Look for a Standup Comedy video show release featuring the Famous (Saget, Leno, Carvey & More) ...and not so Famous (Bedore, Bruner, Abel, McTique, & More) AND and a online comedy course where I share all I learned as a comedy producer to those wo want to try and be a standup comic. Based on my book "Be A Standup Comic...or just look like one"
