► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hi! I’m Jared, and I co-host my podcast with my long-time friend, Kelsey. Our Podcast is called “What’s Good?” And our goal is to focus on what’s going right in the world. Our unique approach to news focuses on positivity and empowerment, encouraging you as our listener to see the good in the world, and make the change required to live your best life. Most of our listeners are young adults, but we hope that our ideas can be useful for people of all ages and in all walks of life.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
About two years ago, I began thinking about making a podcast highlighting positive news and the good things going on in the world. I began laying out some plans, and by October of 2019, I had called Kelsey, a friend from high school, to see if she wanted to co-host. We recorded our first episode in the last week of December that year, and made the goal to publish episodes every week.
Learning about all the people who had made significant change in the world encouraged us and pushed us to continue making and releasing episodes. As a pandemic ensued and life got crazy, our show gave us hope and consistency, showing that even in world-wide calamity. We hope to continue spreading positivity and growth-mindset for years to come!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We now release podcasts once a month, and although we aren’t making money off it now, we find fulfillment in recording with friends and pretty incredible people.
Normally, we record on Friday, edit (which takes 2 hours tops) and release on Saturday with an instagram post to alert our followers of the new episode and get them excited!
So far, production has been free! We use Anchor.fm which is a platform that distributes podcasts for free to apple and spotify. We record straight from our laptops, and edit on garageband, which is free if you have a Mac. We market through instagram, and so far have had some good success. Additionally, we invite guests to regularly join us, and many of them give us free advertisement by posting about our podcast on their instagram stories.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We hope to get sponsorships, but for the time being, we are happy to produce our podcast for fun!
We just breached our first 1,000 listens and our new episodes are averaging 100 listens, which we hope will continue to grow as we release episodes more regularly.
Our only sponsorship right now is from Anchor. Additionally, as our distributor, once we get a large enough audience, Anchor will send sponsors our way!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We just use our laptops to record, and GarageBand to edit!
Normally for our guests, we just slide into DM’s on instagram and ask people if they’d be interested in joining us! So far we have had several incredible guests, many with large followings and great things to say!
To prepare for our interviews, my co-host and I usually browse positive news websites and discuss current news stories deciding on a theme and what we want to focus on. We also try to find an inspirational quote to discuss and relate to the stories we find.
In the past, we have recorded in our school library which had recording equipment, but especially since COVID-19, Zoom has been really effective for normal episodes and interviews with guests. Zoom has a recording feature, and you can download the stripped audio and edit it from there!
► How do you market your show?
Listeners can find our show on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, Audible, Anchor, and Google Podcasts. Additionally, we have an instagram account that we post regularly regarding our episodes and general updates.
Statistics wise, 28% listen on apple podcasts, 22% listen on Amazon, 12% listen on Spotify, and 3% listen on Anchor (35% are unaccounted for).
We have also launched a website (whatsgoodpodcasting.com) but that hasn’t proved to be a very successful mode of communication or advertisement.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
You can do it! Podcasting is an easy and fun way to share your perspective on the world. There are plenty of YouTube videos, books, and blogs about starting your own podcast, but the most important thing is to be yourself and get started. You can always scrap your first season if your later seasons do well :).
