► Tell us about you and your podcast
Hi we're Jac and Nat, the hosts of How Did We Not Know That. We are both recent college grads who are studying for the Foreign Service Officer Test. We decided to make this history podcast after we realized how much we didn't know about basically anything important. Each week we sit down and have a conversation on important events in history as we ask "how did we not know that?"
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
We decided we wanted to make a podcast because of the conversational aspect of our show. We love a lot of history/politics/news podcasts but saw there was a lack of young colored women representation. We realized that we could fill that gap and that by using the podcast as a study tool it would help us increase our communication and research skills while preparing us for the Foreign Service Test. We started it the last week of April this year and released our first episode by the first week of May!
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Since we are both fresh college grads we don't have a lot of money so we've been very hustle oriented here. Anchor allowed us to host our podcasts for free which helped a lot. We have stuck to very simple methods of marketing through social media and spreading the word through friends and family. We try to release 2 full episodes a week with a bonus minisode episode if we have time. It usually takes us a week to research a new topic, 1-2 hours to film, and then 2-3 hours of editing and preparing videos, we have a lot of fun running this podcast though so the time usually flies. Jac does have a day job and if there is a particularly busy week for her, Nat is often able lighten the load by taking on the bulk of editing. We communicate very frequently with each other about how we are feeling and if we ever need more time it's not an issue. At the end of the day we are here to learn and have fun, it shouldn't stress us out. We do fund this podcast ourselves, but we actually don't spend any money to run the podcast right now because we are both still newly graduated. It's been a fun challenge to figure out how we can run this podcast with no money, but our current goal is to take whatever money we can make and put it right back into the business to keep improving the podcast.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Since we are still very new, we only have one sponsorship from Anchor at the moment and we don't make very much money from our ads. We gain more in regards to knowledge, skills, and enjoyment for what we do. It's awesome to be able to work on something we are both really passionate about.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
We record our audio on our phones and then edit in garageband. We also run a youtube channel where we take video recordings from Zoom, edit them in imovie and then post them as well. Our guests are mainly our friends from other countries or backgrounds who share the same passion for history and knowledge that we do.
► How do you market your show?
We use social media the most and try to post something every time we release an episode. This helps get consistent exposure to our friends and family.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Our advice is that it's okay to not know everything and that learning is an ongoing process. Whatever you choose to do have fun with it and don't be afraid to start.
