► Tell us about you and your podcast
As a natural products executive with more than 20 years of experience formulating health-promoting foods and supplements, and as a podcaster with multiple shows, I felt it was time to bring these knowledge bases together to educate all people. We each have a role to play in protecting our long term health and the health of our planet. And while there is no "one way" or "best path" for all people, I pride myself on offering comprehensive fact-checked and science-based nutrition information that can support your health journey.
Listeners of Nutrition Without Compromise span from young activists, to older adults who want to take more control of their health. Many take supplements to augment their health regimen, including products produced by our sponsor, Örlö Nutrition. They produce the world's most sustainable algae supplements including Ömega-3, DHA, Prenatal DHA and Immunity Boost. Their omega-3 products are in the polar lipid form for 3x the absorption of fish oils without the fishy burps. Our partnership has gained Nutrition Without Compromise press mentions in Forbes and other notable publications as the podcast arm of Örlö's marketing strategy. This has brought more new listeners from the entrepreneurship world and from the algae technology space.
Ultimately our listeners care about great nutrition and sustainability.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I love the medium of podcasting for telling stories that are longer-format but which don't require reading. You can have great conversations with interview guests, discover and learn new things, and develop stronger relationships with your customers and listeners.
My initial goals when I started podcasting back in 2021 were twofold. I wanted to exercise my voice and tell stories that I felt deserved more airtime, while also networking and hosting conversations with people I held in high regard. I made the decision to launch my first show, Care More Be Better, a social impact, sustainability and regeneration show, in November 2020. I created the brand, built the plan, produced an intro/outro and trailer and also built the website prior to launching my trailer episode in January 2021. I had planned to launch the show with interview episodes in March, but moved it up to early February, producing a new episode each Wednesday ever since.
Now, with my third show, Nutrition Without Compromise, my focus is different. My goal is to raise awareness and educate people about the important intersection of nutrition and sustainability. With this show I'm putting power back in the hands of the audience. They can expect to learn how to manage their health, advocate for themselves, and gain insights into the key nutrients they need to ensure they are getting enough of every day.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
Nutrition Without Compromise is funded by Örlö Nutrition, the brand sponsor. This show is part of my work as an omega-3 expert and brand builder. I helped to architect the products and create the brand from step 1. It has been a dream project for me. I probably spend 10 hours a week networking, preparing, writing, recording, producing, and sharing the podcast with the world. It's doing really great so far, with great guests and content so I couldn't be more pleased.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
For this show, we are sponsored exclusively by Örlö Nutrition, so I don't need to seek out other sponsors. Because the podcast was created as part of our brand launch, the partnership existed before we launched our trailer episode. Only 2 months in, we just crossed 1200 downloads in a 30 day period. Our top episode has had over 200 listens in the past 30 days, so this is really promising. The podcast is an incredible networking tool. It's enabling me to now build a panel of experts (including myself) for Bioneers 2023 in Berkeley, CA. This helps me establish credibility both for myself as an expert, and the brand I worked to create. As an added bonus, I'm making great friends along the way!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I record my podcasts (all 3) using Streamyard. I occasionally use Zoom, but I don't love that its only output is as mp3s. Streamyard provides lossless WAV files and higher quality video, so it wins there every time. I use a SHURE SB7 microphone and a Zoom Podtrak P4 as my interface. The Zoom Podtrak enables me to record backup audio files while also adjusting audio levels for optimal recording quality.
Potential guests come to me directly asking to be on the show on Podmatch, Podbooker, or even just directly via email. Some are individuals I already know, and others are people who were referred my way. I'm grateful that I'm at no loss for great guests. This is partly because I've got a few podcasts now, so I'm making a name for myself in the space of podcasting, especially as it relates to telling stories of health and sustainability.
► How do you market your show?
We post through social media, including share of video clips, audiograms, and quote cards created from our show. I've recently started a TikTok channel where we also share video clips. These have helped draw more people to the show. Roughly half of our listeners come from Apple though we're seeing more android, and tablet devices also listening to this show.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Do your homework before you get started. Figure out the format you want for your show. Listen to as many podcasts as you have time for in the space you hope to play in. Emulate what you love about them, and omit what you don't like. Then, work to make it yours. When you master your voice, it will get better and better. Episode 1 may not be everything you hope it to be, but it will continue to develop and grow with time. You will get better at this, even if it's hard today. Do not be discouraged, just keep chugging!
