► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started this podcast as a way to help myself, and listeners around the nation, understand why salmon runs are struggling so much, and what to do about it, before it is too late. There's so much misinformation from PR hacks and big industry and influencers and advocates - or even just half-information, as I call it - out there about why the 5 pacific salmon species are struggling or even why your average person should care about some fish up in Alaska, and I wanted to get to the bottom of it.
Salmon Wars was born of that. I interviewed the people on the ground affected by it - subsistence fishermen and women who rely on these fish for food security in remote places, scientists and experts, tackle shop owners and sport fishing guides who rely on these fisheries, and commercial fishermen who make their livelihoods in and around salmon and fishing.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
This is a passion project from a lifelong lover of anadromous and migratory fish. It's my love letter to salmon and a plea to others around the nation to get involved in rescuing these fish before it is too late.
I fund it entirely myself, and as a podcast producer myself through my company Trout Stream Studios I am producing the program.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
The podcast is currently ad-supported, I intentionally did not seek out sponsorship of it, to give myself the creative freedom and license to say what needed to be said without the strings attached to a check from a sponsor.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
The episodes are shot mostly remotely using the guest's setup and Riverside, but we had a couple shot in person, or even in one instance on zoom due to technical issues with the guest. We're using megaphone for hosting
► How do you market your show?
80% of our listeners come from Apple, although an increasing amount come from iHeart and Spotify.
We're using email, social media, and word of mouth as marketing channels. I have also invested a modest marketing budget to get trailers in front of listeners.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
The first interview is the hardest, they get easier after that. If you have something to say, people will listen!
