► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Dominic Justina. I am originally born and raised in Jamaica before I left my island life behind to live in North America as a teenager. I am a creative and visual artist in constant pursuit of becoming a better version of myself. I was a shy kid, observing everyone and everything around me as if I was watching a tv show. However, now I have much to say since finding my voice. Life on Hifi is about exploring self-mastery and our massive creative potential. Listeners are youth 18-34 who are interested in self-growth tips for living their best lives. For more info about me check out my website:https://www.dominicjustina.com/
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I love to listen to podcasts about spiritual and mental growth. My favourites have been, Oprah's Super Soul and Meditative Stories. I started my podcast in 2018 after a few people, including a college professor, told me I had the voice for it. It took me about 4 months to release my first episode and launch my podcast.
My entire life, I had struggled with understanding my value. Externally, my life was great, my parents sacrificed a lot to afford me a wonderful life, and for that I am grateful. Everything shifted when I was 15-years-old, and my brother was unexpectedly killed. This was the most painful and unexpected thing I had ever gone through; it was a serious wake-up call. I never imagined something like this could ever happen to me; I was young, and my neighbourhood was safe, and my life was wonderful. This loss uprooted all the baseless attachment to fear and silencing my voice. It taught me a thing or two about the fragility of life and why we should never take it for granted, and I feel like it’s my responsibility to share this meaning with others.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
It's been difficult to balance my time with my day job and my podcast in the past. Now, I've hired two ladies to support me with marketing, online engagement and social media. It's easier to focus on producing the podcast (hosting, editing the audio and video while overseeing the marketing process). It also helps to establish a process that's easily replicable and documented for reference. I release an episode 1-2 episodes a month to give myself enough time to balance this project with my day job. I fund this podcast myself, here are the main expenses:
Marketing and Outreach: $160/month
Podbean hosting plan: $108/yr
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Connecting with people to engage in meaningful conversations is a passion of mine. These podcasts are an extension of my journey towards self-mastery. I get to share these conversations with the world and my dream is to inspire others to tap into the parts of themself that want to live an abundant life. I also love using the podcast as an opportunity to showcase my skills as a storyteller and host. I am currently looking for support in finding sponsors.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I was able to source affordable hardware, here are my go-to's: Mac Pro Laptop, Samsung Q2U Microphone, Pop Filter, Samsung Earbuds
Software used are iMovie (video editing) and Garage band (audio editing). I've been lucky enough to find guests through my personal and professional network. Guests are interviewed remotely via Zoom. What I do to prepare an episode is revisit raw recordings, edit audio and video in their respective software and then add the final product to Youtube and my podcast hosting site with Album Art and a Description.
► How do you market your show?
Listeners find my show on:
- Major podcast streaming sites such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts
- Youtube
Marketing channels are:
Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, email newsletter and word of mouth
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
I was surprised by how much time it took me to research before even launching the podcast. This is not an easy road, but is it completely doable? Of course! If I can do it, so can you and the more time you invest in from earlier on, the easier it is to produce a quality podcast.
