► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Micah Merrick. I am the author of "Rethink the MBA" a book about the hidden risks of attending business school. I am currently an education consultant, with a background in venture capital and venture backed startups.
My podcast, Rethink Education, explores a single idea in each podcast episode through the eyes of a guest that has been on a personal journey to "rethink education", usually by founding a company, leading an organization, or publicizing a novel idea.
My listeners are entrepreneurs, investors, administrators, and staff, primarily in the higher education industry.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I am new to the education industry and view podcasts as the ideal way to meet new people. I also love to talk and love to listen to podcasts, so it seemed like a good personal fit!
I am taking things one quarter at a time. I have nearly reached my 10th episode, and would like to see if I can hit 10,000 downloads by the end of the year.
I started my podcast in June, 2019.
It probably took me 2-3 weeks to release my first episode, including buying the gear, recording, and editing my first episode.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I currently release the podcast on a weekly basis, and it takes me 2-3x as long as the interview time to produce.
I have a flexible schedule and do interviews in the daytime 1x per week, and editing and marketing at night.
I spend <$100 per month on hosting and various marketing tools, but am looking to push that up to $2-$300 per month to outsource more of the editing process.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Turning this from a hobby into a business is still TBD. Right now, I'm happy to use it as a vehicle to learn, and more than anything, have fun of the game of trying to get more downloads!
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I have a $200 mic, a Macbook Pro with Garageband for editing, and use Zoom + Garageband to record (all my interviews are remote).
Twitter is an amazing vehicle to connect with guests!
I spend 1-2 hours researching guests and writing a 1 page "conversation outline" before each interview.
► How do you market your show?
Twitter + newsletter
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Do it to learn and have fun, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Otherwise, if there's more to it than that ($$$ or otherwise), be grateful!
