► Tell us about you and your podcast
I'm Jowanza Joseph, founder and CEO of Parakeet, a B2B SaaS company focused on AI-driven risk management and pre-qualification solutions for industrial enterprises. My background spans technology, data engineering, and the risk/insurance space. "Industrial Risk: Beyond The Blueprint" is a podcast dedicated to the latest in industrial risk, featuring expert interviews and research-backed insights covering safety, compliance, workers' compensation, cybersecurity, organizational change, and more. Our listeners are risk and compliance leaders, safety professionals, and executives driving smarter, safer industrial operations.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I started the podcast because I genuinely believe that industrial risk is one of the most underserved topics in the podcasting world. There's a lot of content for tech startups and finance, but very little for the people managing safety, compliance, and operational risk in heavy industries. I listened to a lot of podcasts myself and noticed that gap. My initial goal was to build a resource for risk and compliance leaders who are hungry for expert-level, actionable content. We launched in 2024, and it took a few weeks from concept to publishing our first episode, mostly spent nailing down our format and finding the right guests.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
We release a new episode weekly. Each episode takes roughly 3-5 hours to produce from guest research and prep through recording, editing, and publishing. I run Parakeet as my primary job, so the podcast is deeply tied to our mission. It's not a side project but a core part of our content and brand strategy. We host on Substack, which keeps costs low. Audio editing and production are handled lean; I invest time more than money. The podcast is self-funded through Parakeet as a business development and thought leadership channel.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
We don't currently run paid sponsorships. The podcast is a strategic investment in Parakeet's brand and thought leadership in the industrial risk space. The biggest gains from podcasting are the relationships we build with domain experts and the credibility it gives us in our market. Every guest conversation deepens my knowledge of the industry and opens doors for future business partnerships. It's also a powerful tool for staying close to the problems our customers face on a daily basis.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Our tools include Substack for hosting and distribution, Riverside for recording, Canva for episode artwork, and standard audio editing software. We distribute and promote on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram. We research each guest thoroughly before the interview, reading their work, reviewing their background, and developing tailored questions that serve our audience of risk and compliance professionals. I always conduct interviews remotely via Riverside. Guests are sourced through LinkedIn, conference networks, referrals from past guests, and direct outreach to authors and researchers whose work is relevant to industrial risk topics.
► How do you market your show?
We primarily distribute through Substack, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and RSS, and publish video clips and full episodes on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Most of our listeners discover us through LinkedIn, where we share each episode with context tailored to our target audience of risk and compliance professionals. Substack's built-in email newsletter is also a significant driver; subscribers get episodes directly in their inbox. LinkedIn is by far our most effective marketing channel, with direct outreach and sharing in relevant industry communities also driving meaningful discovery. We also benefit from mentions at industry conferences and events.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
My biggest lesson: niche down harder than you think you need to. The more specific your topic, the more devoted your audience will be. Don't try to appeal to everyone. For aspiring podcasters, I'd say start before you feel ready. The first few episodes will always be rough, and that's okay. Consistency matters far more than perfection. Invest time in guest research; the best interviews come from genuine curiosity and specific, well-informed questions. Also, Substack is an underrated platform for podcast hosting if you already have a newsletter audience or want to build one alongside your show.
