► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Peter Jay Mulroy and I'm a middle school teacher in New York City, and it's a career I would not change for the world. As a former editor with Major League Baseball's partner division, however, where I covered Olympic sports, the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS, I carry with me a lifelong passion for all things sports -- specifically for the New York Giants, Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish!
Each week on "Sports Today with Peter Jay," I break down the sports scene, with a New York twist. Through the live Podbean app, I'm able to take live call-ins each Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while interviewing some of the most well-known and respected figures across the vast landscape of sports.
No matter what your sporting interests are -- baseball, football, soccer, hockey, fantasy, or sports gambling -- I'll have my listeners covered every week on "Sports Today with Peter Jay."
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I wanted to focus my podcast around positive, engaging, and legitimate interactions with those who listen live. I also want to have a product that will serve as a worthwhile outlet for those who listen on tape delay via platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Podbean, Samsung, Spotify, iHeartRadio and more.
I've been growing this podcast since 2022 and I'm hoping to continue to ignite its success with fun topics, interesting guests and call-ins, and by meeting new sports fans through the different platforms.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I host every Friday live at 7 p.m. ET via Podbean, but my show also posts after the fact across the above named hosts. Since I'm in school until late afternoons and I spend my free time working out or with my wife and daughter, the 7 p.m. window was the perfect time to settle in for my radio show. The time slot has been extremely positive from a growth perspective, as I continue to take positive phone calls with listeners.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
Through Listen Notes and outlets such as Patron, I've been able to promote my show on more of a wide-scale basis. At present, I'm extremely open to discussing further sponsorships with companies/organizations/individuals who are interested in using the sports landscape to help their branding.
In recent times, downloads have greatly increased comfortably into the triple digits each month, which has been so inspiring. With that in mind, I've made it a goal to take those numbers further north, and I hope to do that by connecting with a fanbase that understands how serious I take this, how much I want to hear what they have to say, and by giving my perspective on a litany of topics.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I prepare for each episode by researching the biggest games and storylines of the week a few days ahead of my show time. With a clear Yeti microphone at my disposal and quick editing tools (including GarageBand, which all Mac users have access to), I'm able to cut audio segments and player/coach interviews for play on my shows.
I also take live calls via the Podbean App, and begin all shows with my self-produced introduction, which includes a highlight recap of the previous week in sports.
► How do you market your show?
Thanks to social media, I'm able to promote via the mentioned outlets that publish my show, as well as across LinkedIn, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Each one of these bases has helped me increase listenership and overall downloads, which is a huge plus from a legitimacy standpoint.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Give it your all! If you have a passion for something, don't be afraid to share it. If you're on a podcast where you're able to take live callers, make it known that your callers will have as much of a voice as you to lend their opinions, so long as they're respectful. I've found that the more people who realize you care about what you're doing -- both from a show and people perspective -- the more they'll become a regular within your program.
