► Why & how did you start this podcast?
I guested on a few shows and was hooked. I loved the medium and realized I was good as a guest and had real talking points. I got tired of waiting for hosts to get back and to get "permission" to speak. I realized I wanted my own platform to speak at will with who I wanted to speak with and serve others via the conversation. Started Feb 2020. I started the Journey in 2019 and found a great media company MediaMar to guide the process. Started planning in Nov 2019, and then recorded / released first 3 episodes in Feb 2020. I started at 1x/week and then got the bug and needed to release 2x/week due to so much demand to be on the show and in some cases I couldn't say no. My goal was to build great content to serve others and to use it as a brand builder for the Drop in CEO brand. Now it is starting to generate more meaningful conversations with the guests (and listeners) to convert to collaboration and business opportunities.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release 2x/week. It has been 2 guests / week and occasionally I drop in a 3rd for a solo episode. With a book coming out, switching it to 2x/week, but one guest and one solo so I can speak about the book. I'm in my own business so the podcast is part of my marketing and business development. I spend 2 hours researching the guest, discovery call and asset prep. The interview time is 1 hour and then there is 1 hour afterwards in post production to my production company. This also includes guest experience and sharing communications regarding the status of the show. The production company does all the production work, distribution and social media assets.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I have no sponsors at this time and it's not part of my current business model to monetize. A monetization plan is in the works and to be executed by 4Q21. I do this for the networking, building know like & trust with audience and direct engagement. this has been significantly increasing in the last 2 months and leading to possible conversion. My business is more relationship building and a long term game.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
I use squadcast for recording, Monday is used by the production company for scheduling and Omny is used to house the podcast and distributed. I get pitched now to be on the show, but I use services like Interview valet to also find guests. I get a lot of referrals. I also get a lot of smaller PR firms and podcast companies pitching to me now. I used to proactively get them, but found in the end the relations were not very strong. As I said before, there is 30 minutes discovery, 30 minutes prep for the interview, 60 minutes for the interview and then some other post production of downloading files and uploading to the production company and various other communications, about another 30-60 minutes.
► How do you market your show?
Listerners find me through referrals, apple, but I advertise most on Linkedin and FB. Also email marketing to showcase my episodes. Also all episodes are showing on my website as well. Linkedin is the best way to find me and then the guests share with their social & email lists. I mostly advertise on apple so that is 60%, and smaller percents pick me up on the other platforms.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
Just push the button and do it. That's the biggest hurdle. Don't hesitate. Perfection comes through experimentation and you're never done. If you were, you'd be boring over time. Best resources for me have been Podcast masterminds, podcast media companies and also Interview Valet is great.
