► Tell us about you and your podcast
My name is Daniel Asuquo and I'm the Host of Let It Off Ya Chest. I am a Nigerian and presently an undergrad student studying Civil Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria.
Let It Off Ya Chest is an outlet for me to talk about a lot of things I've discussed with my self in the past.
My listeners are human beings, obviously. A huge percentage of my listeners are young people but the issues I talk about cuts across age brackets.
► Why & how did you start this podcast?
Podcast was one of three options I had, the other two couldn't fly at the time because I don't consider myself to be good with the pen and I am also camera shy; hence podcasting.
Before podcasting even crossed my mind, I have always had it in me to be of help to those close to me and generally anyone who comes in contact with me.
I have always wanted to share: maybe a word, a quiet moment, whatever I could.
In my head I always wanted the endgame to be that people met me and got some form of relief, like a weight getting off their chest.
I started podcasting during the COVID-19 lock down. June, 2020.
It took me three weeks to release my first recording. I wanted it to be as perfect as possible, looking back now, I don't think I achieved that.
► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?
I release episodes weekly except when I have a series going on, then it is daily. At the moment I have been able to complete two series, one was solo and the other, the recent one I had to involve nine friends of mine. It was massive.
I am a student and my primary focus right now is getting a degree. Knowing that, whatever free time I have that's not being taken up by school work I use it to draft scripts and record.
Most times I write scripts for 5 episodes at once, that way all I need do is just record on another free time.
I don't really spend so much on my podcast seeing that I don't have recording gear at the moment. Yes, you read that well.
I use my phone to record, edit and upload my episodes. Hopefully, I'd be able to get some gear soon.
► What do you gain from podcasting?
I haven't had any sponsorship yet but I'm very open to sponsors. For enquires in this regard, please shoot me an email at letitoffyachest@gmail.com.
The major benefit I get from podcasting is the feedback I receive from my listeners about how a particular episode or just a sentence made so much meaning to them and began a conversation in their mind. This gives me so much joy.
► How does your podcasting process look like?
Like I said, I don't have any gear at the moment so my podcasting process is pretty simple. Once I get insights as to what I want an episode to be about, I begin to draft points in my journal and try to cut out excesses.
One major feature of my podcast is the duration of each episode; I would rather pass a message in 5 minutes than ramble for 30 minutes without saying anything meaningful.
What I say and how I say it is very important not just to me but to the listeners at large, so I try to streamline my ideas to focus on certain areas.
I have had guests at some point. I've done an interview in person and over Zoom. Zoom works best for me when the guests are not in the same room.
► How do you market your show?
My listeners find me on social media; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. At the end of each episode, I have a sign out "... If you know anyone who would also want to listen, be sure to show them how you got here". This action call is responsible for bringing most of my listeners.
► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?
One key advice I'd give is: start regardless. If you're waiting till you have everything sorted out, you won't start at all. Everyone who has made a name in the world today didn't have all the answers at the initial stage. Don't be scared to ask questions, people are there to help you.
Check out other podcasters, you would learn a thing or two from them.
